"Effect vs Affect" These two words are probably the most commonly misused words in written english. (Maybe not, but 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot) Affect with an a means "to influence," as in, "The arrows affected Ardvark," or "The rain affected Amy's hairdo." Affect can also mean, roughly, "to act in a way that you don't feel," as in, "She affected an air of superiority." Effect with an e has a lot of subtle meanings as a noun, but to me the meaning "a result" seems to be at the core of all the definitions. For example, you can say, "The effect was eye-popping," or "The sound effects were amazing," or "The rain had no effect on Amy's hairdo." I have never claimed that I could spell, only that grammar is another pet peeve. It's getting to be a rarity when anyone gets it right. It also annoys me when people use apostrophes to make plurals. Apostrophes are used to indicate possession, in most cases. Not to mention the use of an expletive is strictly forbidden in formal writing, and on this forum (even "bleeped" out as you have it). I will let it slide this time but next time we will not be so generous so don't ever do it again or I might have to use a sentence that has more bad grammar and runs on much longer than this one does. There seems to be quite a few folks graduating high school that wouldn't be able to read the above no matter how it was spelled.
