help pick an mos

Recommended Posts

i am about to sign a "Try one" contract. i can get a new mos, should i pick something aviation so i am around the birds and pilots to get LOR's? if so what should i pick. i can choose from anything really.

Good post! You and I are in the same boat... I've been forwarned about "try ones" mainly most commands wont take you very serious being you may not have enough time to complete all the steps and also you wont have the required school time on your contract- but I'll take my chances- I've done much of the footwork I can do as a civilian- My suggestion would be to get an MOS that will put you in the AVBN, not sure what state you are from but just about everyone has Blackhawks for 15T (UH-60 repair) is almost a universal option, if your state has multiple frames 64/47/58's and so on... you have more options to choose from, worst case if they have no mechanic slots, you can also shoot for a 15P (Aviation operations), you're not learning the birds but you'll get the face time in the bn and learn the paperwork side of the house. But definitely get something in the AVBN, aviation takes care of their own, not that any other section wouldnt, but it just makes more sense to stick with the aviation community.

Aviation. Screw everything else in the military. Get a maintainer position, then after awhile, you can put in for a crewcheif position, and actually go fly with the aircraft. Plus it puts you around the pilots, and knowing the pilots will get you great LORs, granted you aren't a lazy sh*tbag.

Hookers are 15U's... If you go for that, you will (just like the 15T's) be around the pilots, etc... and We take passengers whenever somebody asks... doesn't matter to us if 1 more person is on the bird (normally)... I've taken passengers on NVG flights, paradrops, XC's... As long as we aren't doing Emergency Procedures and the PC is cool with you going, it's not a problem. Really, no matter what MOS you pick, set yourself in an AV battalion, make yourself known as a hard worker, always on time, etc... and you will be noticed. Just like Ragman said, if you present yourself as a sh*tbag, you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being selected. Good luck.

I have been out for a few years but when I was in, a Hooker was a 67U and Blackhawk was 67T, must have changed. I agree with the Maint. side if possible, I was a mech. for the first few months then got into a crew chief position. Flying with the aircraft was the best part of the job.

no im a really hard worker and always early. i would love to get some time in the bird before selections and all as well. i am seriously looking at maintenance, but supposedly the local reserve av unit is a maint battalion. and it is just now going from company sized to btn. so it will be setting everythign up and they are unsure wether or not we will have our own birds so i dunno what to do.

Where are you living? You must be talking about an AVIM unit? If so, I am not sure I would recommend joining that unit... You won't be around the people that we have previously mentioned... atleast not to my knowledge, I may be wrong.

This is a little different opinion than most, I think. I'm sure it would help if you were around aviation but I don't think it's necessary if you know of something else you would want to do. I joined with the intention of flying but my first MOS was 35M (HUMINT collector). The only part of the packet that was possibly more difficult than people coming from aviation was the letter of recommendation. If you're resourceful, that shouldn't be a problem. If you're interested in being an aircraft mechanic, by all means, I would go that route. It can't hurt to know the systems anyway. If you're interested in something else, though, I don't think it hurts any. That's just my two cents. Good luck.
