Switching to WOFT

Recommended Posts

Wats up gents,

So I was wondering if any of you aviators could help me out? I joined the army 3 years ago and picked 11B as my MOS. I wanted to go aviation but I got suckered into the infantry by my recuiter. Now Im sitting in Iraq and I got a few months left and have decided to persue my dream of flying, so I talked to my CO and Iv started the packet. Iv got a GT of 111 and ASVAB of 79, APFT is around a 250 and Iv recently been promoted to E-5, but since im in Iraq I cant really go any farther until I get home, so my question for you gentlemen is what books do you aviators recommend that I could read and study to help me prepare for the WOFT program and IERW? Iv already purchased and have read many books on the AFAST and Iv managed to get the AR's and most of the DD forms for the packet, but I dont have much on Helicopters and Rotary Wing aircraft? I would honestly appreciate any help and could not thank you enough.

Well, first off... i'm pretty sure you CAN put in a packet while deployed. although, i'm not positive, so someone else may be able to speak about that...

As for Books, there are many that are available for helicopters. Are you looking for Army Pubs that pertain to what we do? If so...

FM 1-203 is Fundamentals of Flight (has aerodynamics, etc...)

AR 95-1 Flight Regulations

websites...

www.aviationtrainer.com set up by a Rucker IP, pretty sweet lil' site, has a ton of stuff on it

Chad,

Thank you for your information on the AR, FM and the website. The biggest problem that Im running into over here is that I cant find any place to take the AFAST and the Class 1A flight physical. Iv had about 6 physicals during pre-mob but unfortunatly they dont meet the flight physical regulations. But Iv been doing alot of reading and research and am going to be starting my packet 2 months before I hit the states, so I can get it in, because our sister brigade is talking about Afganistan sometime around 2010/2011 so I would like to not get wrapped around that axle. I was thinking about the next time I have a day off, heading over to the airfield and talking with some of the aviators that provide air support in our AO. But I dont wanna get in their way when they are doing missions. Again I thank you for your information with the AR, FM and the website.

Jarett,

I would definitely go talk to the AV guys, they will have a Flight Surgeon over there, because they have to do flight physicals overseas, it doesn't stop. The problem is, that the flight surgeon may or may not be able to do a Initial Class 1W physical. However, you need to ask, because if you don't....your answer will be no. That also might be a good time to ask for a Letter of Recommendation (must be from a CW3 or MAJ or higher). Those 2 things are the hardest part of the packet, in my opinion, especially coming from an MOS that's outside of AV (I wasn't in AV when I applied). As for getting in their way, i wouldn't worry too much about that, there should be atleast a couple of guys sitting around doing Operations stuff or on an 'off' day.

That's what I would suggest....

Chad,

Once again I want to thank you for your advice, I did what you suggested and I went over to the Air field and I linked up with a crew chief who was nice enough to show me around both his bird and his wingman's. After the tour he when linked me up with four different pilots and we sat around for about 2 hours shooting the sh*t and answering almost every question I could throw at them. I also found a base where I can take the AFAST, so once I talk to the flight surgeon, which the pilots told me where they were, Im gonna schedule a date to take the test. Once again I appreciate all the help you have givin me and I can not thank you enough.
