jpauley Posted June 19, 2009 Report Share Posted June 19, 2009 hi, ive been in the army now for a total of almost 6 years. almost 3 active. i recently took the fast class and raised my GT score up to a 111. I have flown fixed wing cessna's before, but ive never been in a helicopter. i have the principles of helicopter flight book. It seems to be a great book that covers a little bit of everything. i was wondering if there was anything else that might help me on my goal to become a pilot. ive also has lasic/PRK surgery. my eye sight is better than 20/20 now. i was also wanting to know if anyone knows how the AFAST is scored? any help would be greatly appreciative. thank you. Mymm Posted June 19, 2009 Report Share Posted June 19, 2009 That's the book I started with and felt like my head was going to explode. Angle of attack, incidence, lift ratio what? It really helped me get at least a basic understanding of what I was going to be trying to do. There are some study guides out there for the AFAST that should at least show you what to expect on the test, if you have some fixed wing time some of it will be fairly standard, attitude indicators and what not, 3d positioning, sure you'll be fine. Your score doesn't have to be great on it however, if you fail it it's 6 months to take it again, and you can only do it once, obviously higher the score the better. Principles of Helicopter Flight is a good book but I thought other books were more relevant for AFAST purposes. If you're short on time, I would just study the ARCO AFAST book and FAA rotorcraft manual (for the helicopter knowledge section). If you have a little more time, look into a few other books. A while back a thread entitle "preparing for the AFAST" (2nd page of this forum)was posted and I outlined what books had worked for me in my experience. I studied the ARCO and read the three books I had listed....got a 126 on the test.. Not exactly sure how they score it, but the AFAST itself is an odd makeup. If you look at the sections, a lot of it is based on you as an individual (background section has 25 questions). AND...there's some extremely odd questions on there, where you are given two options and asked which one you would prefer. (i.e. Would you rather: A. be kicked in the groin, B. Have severe sunburn) They also asks questions about your family and the impact your military service will have on them. One thing I cannot stress enough though, is to memorize the arrows/directions in the Complex Movements section, so you can look at the question and answer right away. A CW3 gave me that tip, and when I got into the exam, I was definitely glad he did - the timing on that section can get a little tough.
