To the academy? Or not to the academy?

Recommended Posts

ahhh memories. I loved being an FTO and once rookies were at the "learn the paperwork" stage, I would get them into all manner of sh*t storms, just so I could park in a dark lot and turn the computer to them and give them the "it's not going to write itself"look as I motioned towards the mounting call logs of the runs we had been on. That was the best part of having a rookie, the only paperwork you usually did all shift was their eval....

Honestly I didn't know what to think after the day I interviewed with the detective. Towards the end of the interview she all of a sudden started chewing me out pretty bad for an inconsistency in my packet, then stood up smiled and shook my hand and walked me out.

I was relieved to get the email for the medical.

Yeah and one agency I applied to I had the most awesome interview ever. No joke I thought we were one step away from heading out for drinks and cigars at the secret cop bar location.... 3 weeks later I got a "thank you for your interest..." letter. And this is after I had already been a cop for about 8yrs :)

Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress. I am in the same situation. I have been a LE officer for about 4 years for a medium sized metropolitan department. I knew when I hired on that I wanted to get into the air unit. I have my private and am almost done with my instrument rating. It's just a waiting game. My agency has a couple civilian spots and mostly sworn positions. When a spot does become available, it's very competitive to get in. In the 4 years that I have worked here, they have not had an opening and may not for some time. As some one else already mentioned, the hard part is being patient and still going in everyday and being a great street cop. At the same time you have to stay out of trouble so you don't mess up your chanced for a transfer when the opportunity does come. Anyway, I appreciate all the great advice and wisdom that's been posted here. Stay safe.

This forum has humbled me, taught me, inspired me and whipped my a$$ into shape since I started posting.

Passed the medical.

Now on to meet POLY...

Best thing you can do, try an relax. Your gonna be nervous either way and sometimes the questions they ask are ridiculous. Relax, be honest....

I've got my background interview and poly in a couple weeks. We'll see how that goes. I've had a military TS-SCI, and the police background checks put that to shame so far.

I only had a secret clearance in the AF, and I had a very similar feeling to you about how thorough the background investigation the police conveyed to me. Looks like I checked out fine so far!

It's unfair to offer reassurance to you because all of these departments operate differently but......you can always come to Philly!

Definitely true, based on my experience thus far. I'm more impressed than I already was at the quality of police in general if they've all passed the colonoscopy I've seen during my process! I think a lot of it comes down to overall honesty. As my polygrapher told me, a lot of people get washed out because they don't admit openly to something that was waiverable anyway. Maybe that's gamesmanship on his part, but it seems true. Either that, or there are more squeaky-clean people out there than I thought.

We just had a candidate fail ours. He went through the poly.. had some issues and when he was asked if he wanted to discuss/clarify his reactions he withdrew from the process citing "Withdrawing from the process will save my family from suffering embarrassment from my past. I apologize for wasting your time."

And put a thumb tack in your shoe and press your big toe on it every time they ask you a question. :D

(thats a joke)

After about 6 hours of polygraph I was falling asleep in the chair, examiner got all suspicious that I was trying to beat the machine, asked me if I was breathing differently or if I'd gone to the internet to look for ways to lie. Some people fail the poly even if they tell the truth apparently. Looks like I'll be flying civilian EMS instead...

Geesh. I was nervous when I took mine but the key is honesty. They are gonna find out anyway so they may as well find out from you. I know we loose a ton of candidates to poly... and probably a fair share to the pt.

My guy said I was breathing funny (Too deeply? Is there a normal way to breathe when you have to sit perfectly still with a girdle on?) and that it was throwing things off. He got his QA guy to look at the chart, and then he told me I passed. Hopefully I'm GTG. Now I'm waiting on my BI to wrap up.
