Childrens Medical S-76B

Recommended Posts

Just driving by Executive (Formerly Red Bird) Airport in Dallas, Texas and along with the one of the three DPD 206B's I always see on the pad, I noticed a huge tail rotor poking over another building in the background. Upon further investigation I found out the helo was a Sikorsky S-76B with an awesome paint job for Children's Medical Network.

I didn't take this exact picture but I'm almost positive it is the same chopper, at least they are identical if it isn't.

Anyway I just noticed a couple of odd things, the helicopter seems to be based there now since its been there for about a month yet I don't see any pilot area where you could actually bunk up 24/7. And of a little interest to me as well was that on the FAA records the N-Number comes up as registered to: HELINET AVIATION SERVICES LLC. out of L.A.

Yepp, that looks like the Childrens Hospital ship that was stationed at VNY for years. Been a few months since I saw it there, but I don't fly much out of VNY anymore.

No clue why its in Texas.

edit. Here is some interesting facts I didnt know...and might explain the Texas connection.

Hey guys...I can shed some light on this for you. I used to work for Children's Medical Center in Dallas...flew on this machine 5 times a week.

Children's Medical Center in Dallas has a critical care transport team. They use RW, FW, and ground ambulances. This was the RW asset. It was based at Love Field when I worked there. I think the fact that it is at Executive may have something to do with Children's changing providers from Helinet to another company. This would mean Helinet would have to move the machine from Children's rented hangar space at Love to someplace else while they figure out where it will end up ultimately (that's just speculation on my part.) Most likely hasn't been re painted yet. Either that, or it got moved due to weather, as Love was closed for a number of hours a few days ago and has a huge backlog of flights. OR, it may have something to do with the huge amount of Superbowl flights coming in, making it hard for them to get priority routing out of the airspace if they get a lifeguard mission.

Anyway, this machine is old news in the Dallas area. Has been flying for at least 5+ years. It is very nice, but old. Children's has been talking about getting a newer machine for quite a while now. I will call a few friends of mine and see if I can get any more solid info...

Amazing information, thanks for everything. I can inform you as well that the reason for the uprooting of the unit, this is because as of late the city of Dallas has moved almost 100% of the private and charter business to Executive due to commercial influx at Love. As long as we are on the subject, do you know which company is taking over the service from Helinet?

Thanks again!

I am pretty sure it doesn't have to do with the City of Dallas. Children's rented hangar space and FBO services from Signature at Love due to its proximity to the main campus hospital. It also had facilities for their 6 ground ambulances and 2 fixed wing aircraft. If the helicopter has been at Executive for a month or longer, I suspect Children's has changed providers, and N615D is sitting there waiting to go back to Van Nuys or wherever its next destination...after a fresh coat of paint of course.

Last I heard, Petroleum Helicopters Inc. had a pretty good shot at securing the contract, but I can't say so for sure, there were a few companies with bids out.

Like I said, this is all speculation. It could be any number of reasons why the machine is at Executive...but this one sounds like a good contender.

Last I heard the private business and charter section of Love was booming. The whole side of the airport off of Lemmon was dedicated to this. There were multiple large FBOs and private hangar space, all of which I am sure is still there. You may want to check your info again, I think business and charter aviation is alive and well at Love.

The private FBO's and hanger space are certainly huge at Love but I do know that for a fact the privvate sector at Executive was booming now with many people moving over to Executive just because our extremely stupid local government thinks that an FBO can just pop up and move over night. All they are concerned with is scheduled commercial flights and more $$$ for the people down at city hall.

I can certainly agree that the S-76 is most likely going to return there however considering that even our messed up city can understand the need for lifesaving flight OPs.

Petroleum Helicopters has in fact taken over the contract from Children's Medical Center, Dallas Transport Team. They have provided a new(er) Sikorsky S-76C++. I don't have the tail number.

Regards.
