AW1985
Velocity- Agreed! No rotary wing flights during IMC.
Hotdogs
I've done a section FW IMC approach and done section RW approaches VMC. I would never take a section PAR with helicopters in IMC. Doing configuration changes with the potential for spatial D in IMC with FW is probably the most difficult part. Dropping the gear and flaps as dash 2 felt like doing a back flip in between my ears. Not looking at the gauges as much in IMC can be pretty nauseating as well.

Yeah I've done the VMC section PAR a couple times. Had the controller ask twice if we were a section because he only had one target. Less than two disks should show up as one. I can imagine the FW IMC would be disorienting. I'm reading Thud Ridge right now and the author talks about flying off a wing and not knowing if they were upside down or right side up. Said nighttime was even worse. Just gotta trust that lead doesn't fly ya into the ground. Edited May 21, 2014 by Velocity173

Personally I think doing instruments is about the most boring thing on the planet, a necessary evil, but crushing the GCA pattern for a couple hours just to make annual mins is like driving a pencil through your eyeballs. Buddy of mine and I would have competitions to see how many times in a row the controller would say "on course, on glideslope" Which in and of itself is kind of like winning the special olympics, because it doesn't really matter who wins - You're still retarded. That and trying to fly the pattern and approach at max blast/buster.

That and trying to fly the pattern and approach at max blast/buster. Lol! After the controller asked if we were a flight I did say to the guy flying with me "that's because I'm tight!" Yeah at MCAS Beaufort we used to have the transports stay in the tower / GCA pattern for hours. Couldn't understand how they could put up with that boredom that long. Fighter guys had enough gas for one maybe two GCAs. Of course the overhead is their approach of choice so unless the field was IFR, they weren't doing a GCA.

skyreaper
Whats wrong with flying tight, low and slow in hard IFR?
Velocity173
Whats wrong with flying tight, low and slow in hard IFR?With two airplanes, a challenge but can be done safely, with two helicopters, an accident waiting to happen. That's why we were saying there aren't any RW aircraft doing it. You'd have to get uncomfortably close in order to pull off a section PAR in hard IMC. That's why in military RW you have the IIMC break up procedure. Everyone needs to seek their own piece of sky to prevent a midair.

I imagine someone has done it with helos before. I've heard stories of guys who went inadvertent and stayed with lead. Stay about a disk or less and in most cases you should be able to maintain sight. You could even stack down or up and overlap disks. I'd give it a shot single pilot...and briefed of course. apacheguy
With Apaches you could might away with it if it was light IMC and you were flying the system, but without good FLIR or in really thick clouds/rain/fog I'd never try it. IIMC is no joke.
