Battalion Board Interview

Recommended Posts

Civilian board over and done with! I received a 71/75 with full recommendations and good review notes.

The hardest part was sitting with my hands flat on my legs and my feet flat. It's hard to not use your hands when you are trying to confidently answer a question. My board was made up of two ROTC officers (LTC and captain) and the recruiting captain.

I was expecting the first question to be general where I could tell them about myself and hit a few of my points. Instead I was asked to name 3 achievements I was proud of from school which threw me off for a minute.

I had my board interview for the National Guard last weekend. Was actually notified of my selection by the guy who encouraged me to join and pursue aviation. President of the board called him with the results and told him give me the news in person. Pretty neat moment.

How long did your interview last? Did they go after your weak spots on your packet? Ive heard a lot of mixed information on these boards.

Mine was about 20 minutes. First question from the board president was about my APFT score, which is the weakest part of my packet. First question from the next board member was about a class I failed in college. They gave me the opportunity to explain both of those things and to talk about how I learned from the experience. Other than those two questions, most of the board was trying to get a sense of how I'd fit in the Army and if I had any strings attached (debt, loans, etc.) that would hold me back.

From what I've heard, the board can vary wildly depending on the location that yours takes place, so my experience will probably be different than yours.

Im hoping the VR community can answer a question for me. I finished putting together my packet in October. The only remaining items are the security interview and the battalion board.

My recruiter tried setting a phone interview with the security interviewer on the battalion board deadline day in October, but the interview didn't happen. Im hoping to make the December battalion board, but still need this security interview. Is this something I can schedule on my own if the recruiter doesn't make it happen? Also just to confirm, the security interview must be done before the battalion board, correct?

Happy Holidays!

My security interview was done about a week after i was selected. So it may vary by station. IIRC they said they like to get them done sooner rather than later due to turnaround time.

Mine was the same as StockTrader. Did my security interview when I first went back to MEPS after getting selected. Then it only took 13 months for me to get my final clearance....I believe all you need for your packet to be submitted is your SF-86 completed so you are able to get your security interview at a later date.

Since I'm currently a Navy Reservist (actively drilling), I was told I could wear my Navy Dress Blue uniform for the BN Board, but my recruiter says it would be better to wear a suit. I don't have a suit, and I do not want to spend $300+ on something I'm probably only going to wear once. Also, I think the Cracker Jack look good, even if the Army hates on it.

Would wearing my dress blues hurt/help/not matter when going to the BN board?

I wore my dress uniform to the battalion board when I was in the Army Reserve applying for Active. I had zero issues with my interview. If you feel comfortable wearing your dress uniform then go for it.

Are these okay answers:

Why do you want to be a warrant officer.

Because I like leadership rolls that challenge me to consistently improve my self and in turn my team by example.

Why should we chose you to be a warrant officer.

Because sombody has got to do it. And I like working as a team.

Why should we trust you with a 20 million dollar helicopter. Because I don't drink. Also, because I have never been in a car accident. So I think I can fly a plane exceptionally well.

How does your family/wife/husband feel about you joining the military.
They admire my bravery. My father is a pilot and wished me the best. Like father like sun I suppose.

How do you feel about being deployed and away from your family for long periods of time.

I will like the adventure. But miss them dearly. If it's possible I will fly them out on deployment with me if it's safe.

Critiques are welcome.

Seems like an overly simplistic/romantic perspective in my opinion. Makes you seem a little naive.

For starters it doesn't demonstrate you understand the role of a warrant officer, and makes it seem as though you don't appreciate the responsibility necessary. Just my .02

Well the thing is that I don't have a pilots license. So I was trying to find examples. But that can be hard to do without experience. What would you say?

Because somebodys gotta do it is a horrendous answer. If I sat on a board and someone said that, Id no go you right then and there. Also, you think family is going to visit you on deployments? Might wanna re-evaluate that one.

Okay, what should I say?

First you should try justifying why you deserve the opportunity to be a warrant officer. Because somebodys gotta do it is rediculous. You understand youre applying to be in one of the most respected positions in the Army right?

Well okay, I can do that. But I don't need to pump my self full of pride to do this job do I? You are not more than human beings like us arn't you?

I think I deserve this position. Because I can handle criticism quite well. Also, when I am placed into stressful situations; I remain calm and seemingly unemotional on the surface.

Further critiques are welcome.

Got it. Handling criticism is a piece of it. You think you deserve it?! Why? Whats your GT and SIFT? PT score? What have you done to stand above your peers? Why should you be chosen over another 18 or 20 year old who crushed all of those things? I havent heard a single thing that makes you a great candidate except you think so. You seem un-emotional under stress? Great. Everyone responds differently to stress. My SP laughs out loud or sings under stress and hes one of the best pilots the Army has seen. So should we not pick you because you dont do that? Convince us why you should be welcomed into the corps.

You may think im being a d*ick but im really not. You can ask the members of this board whos packets ive reviewed and helped. Youve given nothing but fluff as to why you should get picked up.

Also, you can bet the house I pump myself full of pride to do this job. Know why? Because that guy on the ground needs and deserves it. I want him to know hes getting someone above him that worked his balls off to bring the best pilot possible to him in the time he needs it most. It may not be tomorrow, or a year from now, or two years from now. But there may be a day that some 18 year old kid is having the worst day of his life, and me and my buddies will be there to help him in that time of need. Thats why i take extreme pride in it.

Better than your original answers

Thank you, I was thinking adding in some extra things; like the ability to make quick decisions and be as lively as I can while on deployment. Maybe i'll get to blow up a tank. That would be the highlight of any pilots career I am sure.
