Orv and Mark are the EXPERT instructors and Homer Bell is a great building consultant for RWs.

Note Orv's site with lesson's learned (hints & tips) over many years of flying RWs.

Mark Peterson a CFI specializing in Rotorways was training my neighbor recently and said he's logged over 7000 hours in RWs and has only had one engine-out. It was at a hover and landed safely. He first goes over your machine with a fine tooth comb. The nearby Examiner only participates if Mark has done the training and gone through the machine.

They are affectionately known as the “Slowfari”…but are nice machines. I'd like to have one.

There will be a large RW group at Oshkosh this year according to Mark.

The following is re-posted with Mark’s permission. It’s a great chance to get your first RW ride…they are very nice flying helicopters. That’s how I got my first RW flight.

Travel Mannich Lane for about 1 mile to Curtis Drive Turn Right (North)

My home and hangar are at the corner of Mannich & Curtis.

The airport I live at is having an Open House/Fly-In this Saturday May 17th 2014. I live in Foley, AL which is south of I-10 near the coast. We will have free helicopter rides and refreshments. Certainly anyone near us or traveling this way is welcome to stop by. I will have several RW helicopters on display plus a Scorpion 133, recently acquired that I am just now starting to restore. Re: Open House Fly-in
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Collier Airpark Open House/Fly-In was a huge success. We had perfect weather, over 150 people in attendance, 20 plus airplanes and 6 Rotorway helicopters. Ron Weathers & I gave over 35 helicopter rides in our RotorWays. 4 Stearman (Boeing) 75 flew over in formation from Mobile, AL and then landed at our airport. That was just outstanding. We will be doing this again for sure, maybe twice a year. More pics on the airpark website: www.collierairpark.org Click on 2014 Fly-In page.

Oshkosh 2014

To everyone,

Oshkosh July 28 to August 4 2014
(Re-posted)

Oshkosh 2014 is coming up fast and if you plan to attend, pre-buying your tickets and camping passes is the only way to go. The will call line is very short, the pay at the gate line is very very very long. Link to buy tickets: http://www.eaa.org/en/airventure/eaa-airventure-tickets

The "RotorWay Group" will be camping at the same area we did last year. This is a special area where we can camp (RV, travel trailers, or tents), generators 24 hours, store the transport trailers and we can even air taxi from this area to the rotorcraft flight line. It is near the ultralight/rotorcraft runway and we have plenty of room.

I am hoping for a large turnout of RotorWay helicopters on display and hopefully the company will be back and on display.

I will be leaving for OSH on Wednesday July 23 and plan to meet at the KRFD airport of Friday(07-23), then Saturday we will all caravan up to OSH. This allows to get there a few days early and set up at a leisure.

Geoff Downing the rotorcraft chairman and his crew will be there ready to assist us with anything we need.

This is a great spot for us and we are lucky to have it thanks to Geoff.

Let me know if you are coming,

Mark Peterson, CFI

Reportedly Rotorway sold several kits at Oshkosh.

There were 10 Rotorways there...not counting the factory ship.

Re: RWI at OSH

I just got back home from OSH today.

Rotorway only had a few representatives with them and the new owner. The new owner appeared to have a small family entourage with him, and Darron and one other person from the factory that I saw. I did not speak with the new owners so I have no personal information to add or share from them.

I was at the awards Rotorcraft awards ceremony on Friday night sitting a few rows behind them and the new owner did exhibit enthusiasm and excitement when three of the top four awards given to persons who brought rotorcraft to OSH, were actually Rotorway Owners/Builders. I can't remember all the categories but Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion were both Rotorways. Only one Safari and one Gyro Copter received and/or shared an award for any of the other categories. Check the EAA website for details. It was broadcast on EAA radio.

About Rotorway, from my impressions, Darron seemed to be person leading the event with heavy attention being given to prospective buyers. Several ships were ordered at the show, but I couldn't tell you how many. I know Mark Peterson gave many rides, some to prospective buyers, and I believe there may have been some other pilots doing the same. Darron gave me the impression that Rotorway was in the rebuilding process trying to retain key persons who will benefit the company, however with the extended hiatus they may have lost many employees who have sought employment elsewhere. I dare not speculate beyond that. Darron did say they are beginning the process of rebuilding inventories and materials back up.

I camped with the wonderful group of Rotorway Owners across from the ultra light/rotorcraft runway. Mark and Zac, Mike and Marsha, Ron, Brent, Cam, Vicky, and several more. Saturday Morning when we got up there were 9 Rotorway ships on the runway (all flying once pilots could remember where they left their keys). An hour after the Flying Session began 6 of those ship landed in the camping "U-lot" to prep for the trailering back home. There may have been more Rotorway ships which may have come and went throughout the week, but I did not arrive until Wednesday, where I only had a brief opportunity to talk with Homer and Brent before they left for home. My first trip to OSH with a Flying Ship and my two teenage sons as passengers. It was GREAT!

And as for the EAA rotorcraft volunteers. They welcomed me like true friends.
They were more than helpful tending to little needs from running us back and forth to the campgrounds on the John Deere Gators for items we forgot, to moving fuel around for us, and organizing, educating, and recognizing all of us as valued participants and the greatest exhibiter's on field. We were not there to sell things, but rather to enjoy passions with the rotorcrafts. There was no bad mouthing of anyone's machines, just casual emphasis on some bad decisions that some pilots/owners may have unfortunately made.
