Jon B.
The 47 is the one aircraft I haven't had the opportunity to jump out of yet, that I really want to. It's better than the smaller non-high performance craft to jump tailgate from. You can actually stand up. I don't have this issue in say a CASA or SHERPA, but I know plenty that do. For me, tailgate is tailgate.

Hotdogs
I've heard it's an emergency crew extract technique.

cwil7280
Interesting. I always thought that right over his left shoulder was an air intake of some sort, I never imagined it to be a place to sit. If it is an emergency extract, is there some sort of harness attached to the aircraft that he can strap into in case of this type of situation? Or is he just holding on for dear life? It looks like he has something on, but I can't exactly tell what it is.
akscott60
You have an extension strap on your vest. You hook it on in the transmission mount on the Apache, sit back, and enjoy yourself. On the 58 you straddle the weapons pylon and hook in. Way uncomfortable.
smalltownguy
I'd imagine thats a good way to go deaf sitting there but if you gotta get extracted out that bad I'd say hearing loss is the least of your worries!

It looks like he has something on, but I can't exactly tell what it is. That round thing by his left elbow is the nose gearbox for the #1 engine, which is sucking air right past him. You can hook your vest strap onto the handhold but it's only held in by a couple flimsy sheet metal screws. There's a lot of balance and prayer going on during these extractions. That's why it's such a high risk mission which means we almost never get to do them.
d10
And yet every Apache pilot knows a guy who knows a guy who did it once.
Jon B.
Hey now, those stories are almost always at least 90-95% true. Just like any story that starts with "So there I was, I had just finished off this bottle of Captain Morgan (enter other liquor of choice) when...". It's gotta be true! If nothing else it's freaking hilarious.
brackac
And yet every Apache pilot knows a guy who knows a guy who did it once. You must of flown with 3ID. I know two IP's and a Captain who were grounded for doing just that, but on a mission and with operators trying to interdict a squirter. They have amazing video of it, only problem is while gun 2 was filming gun 1, no one was on the squirter, so yeah, that didn't work out. It also wasn't planned. Spur of the moment decision after the ground guys said "Hey, can you pick us up and move us over there".
apacheguy
And yet every Apache pilot knows a guy who knows a guy who did it once. I don't know anyone who's done it, but there was an article in Flightfax about 2-6 and 6-6 CAV, they did it for 'training' back in the day. The OH58D extraction method always looked more interesting to me.
