I'm looking to visit Ft. Rucker to get a feel for the environment and meet with a few who are already in WOFT or been through WOFT. Is there any way I can do this? Is there someone on this forum who is currently at Rucker who I can meet with?

Thanks.

I see the dialogue from this post. Is that "YES" from anyone? Really eager to see Ft. Rucker and meet some folks. If anyone volunteers, please let me know. A friend of mine who I plan to visit lives fairly close to the base, so be nice to drive there and see it.

For people that want to see Ft. Rucker, you have to understand that if you don't have a military ID, it would be a little sketchy for someone in training (or any military member) to bring you onto the base and show you around without knowing you personally. Even if you have the best of intentions, anyone can make an account on the forum and claim to be anyone they want, and if something bad happened, the story that, "he seemed like a genuinely good guy on the internet" holds no water in court. It sounds extreme, but unfortunately that is the world we live in today.

Are you serious? Is that common on AD posts?

Yeah, you just go to the vistors gate and get a pass. Plenty of civilians come on post to see the museum. Anything that's important (flight line) will require a separate badge. Prior to 9/11 Rucker was completely open with no gate guards. It was common to drive from Daleville straight through to Ozark back then.

I just want to scope out the area mainly for the family... Housing, etc... After Rucker, plan on taking the kids to the beach.

I've been to Fort Sill on my own without issue... Just show a drivers license, not even asked a question, kind of shocked me!

AF has always been picky, even prior to 9/11 most required ID and vehicle registration. Some like randolph require a sponsor on the base to call the gate. Most army posts like Ft. Sam Houston didn't even have guard posts, and gates that were more for show than to ever be closed. What annoys me is having to register my car/rental car on some bases (Ft. Eustis comes to mind) There really is no point if your doing 100% ID checks. We stopped using car tags in San Antonio a decade ago.

I'm with you. 3 days into Primary and I broke my foot. Close hold is easy money. Lots of time to study.

Hey don't be letting the secret gold mine of close hold out!!!!

(But seriously)

Ugh. Living in LA, doing the same boring PL flights for crews that have a chip light. No training for combat whatsoever. It's a good job to do just before retirement but for someone just out of flight school, you need to get out and "see the world."
