November 2014 WOFT Board

Recommended Posts

Like everyone has said, finding them isn't very hard. I asked an AH-64 guy I know from Reddit if he'd be willing to help out, and he has been happy to oblige.

Like you I'm an Illinois veteran. I'm also in the guard so I have LORs from my troop and squadron CO on top of this aviator. Reach out to officers you knew when in service and see if they can help. Call the ILARNG and WIARNG aviation units and see if they can help. Madison has a UH-60M unit, and Peoria has UH-60s and CH-47s. I think Chicago has Blackhawks as well. I'm sure there's someone there to help.

Warrant Officers are well aware of the LOR requirement and will typically help you out if you have most of your packet done and can display the drive to want this. Which you do. Don't be afraid to get on the horn and make some random phone calls. Explain what you are trying to accomplish and ask to speak with a senior warrant officer. Politely request an interview and possible follow up for a letter of recommendation. Talk to people you know about what you are doing. You never know who may be able to put you in touch with someone. Heres a breakdown of what I tried before finally nailing down a solid CWO LOR.

Linkedin (now you have to pay to send messages to people you are not connected with)

Other forums

Facebook (aviation pages, PM's to the local guard unit)

Cold calling/Cold E-mailing

Asking around at my flight physical

Family friend finally made a huge connection for me after making small talk one day. Look at it like this. Exhaust all possible options to strengthen your packet. Whats the worst that can happen? You get a polite no, or no response, in which case you are right where you started. I guarantee you will learn a lot in the process about the program and the life as an aviator.

As far as the APFT, Stearmann4 put it best in his sticky. "I'm just a good runner doesn't cut it". Take those words to heart. If you want it bad enough you will be out there getting it done to get stronger and faster. Use different ways to improve. If you can't get outside, crank up the treadmill until you can. Get a little bit better every day and before you know it, you will be alot better.

thanks jeffin.

that is motivating. i am going to try to get thick(or thicker?) skin and bring everything i got for january board. hopefully i can get hold of at least one or two more LORs and get that apft upto 270 or above. just out of curiosity, did you get hold of a warrant officer you've never known until you needed LOR and he/she gave you a good LOR?

I started making contacts early in the process. Once I had everything except for my battalion board complete I began asking. I had never met the CWO until that point and he gave me an amazing one.

would it be conflict of interest to ask recruiting team company commander - he is a captain, and was a board member who battalion boarded me. i was nervous as crack so i can't be too sure, but he said something like his initial branch was aviation or something. anybody know before i call my recruiter and bug the crap out of him, i want to be sure XD.

Not only a co cliff of interest, but not really what a board looks for. Remember that active folks need their aviator LOVE R to be from a CW3+ or aviation O3+ on flight status. Those are field grades. A company grade former aviator isn't likely to be what you need for your packet.

Call some aviation units.

Selected!!! Just found out!

grats!

For fast help with the APFT check out military athlete's APFT plan, its structured, simple to follow, not too time intensive and produces awesome results.

i can max push ups and sit ups. the problem has always been running. the fastest ive ever ran was early 14s and usually i run mid or early 15s. this cold weather isn't helping neither!

I can't believe it! I reach 12 months to ETS in December, I hope I don't have to get a waiver since it'll be 11 in January

From USAREC site.. I'd ask the question now, but seems you will have to.

12-MONTH TIS REMAINING REQUIREMENT: Given the constant changing of retention and the drawdown EXCEPTIONS will be granted on a case by case basis. Applicants will have to include a memorandum requesting to waive the 12 month requirement. At a mimimum, an applicant must have six months remaining on their service contract by the time their packet will be board to even be considered for a waiver. Furthermore, approval consideration will be based on the strength of the MOS and number of applicants applying for the program!

Just saw the breakdown. Insane competition this board.

31 applicants, 11 selected

Averages

GT: 130

APFT: 277

SIFT: 67

Gpa: 3.19

Damn, that's no joke.

I wonder how many of those non-selects were guys that were flat out non-competitive, and how many just weren't selected for cause of saving spots for the next board.

That's a decent 13 point jump for apft scores over the last couple of boards that i've been able to find the averages. But I dont think the averages for the other sections have risen by that much. Hard to tell with out knowing the scores of the people who don't make it.

Good thing I've got that 300... Yeah, I'm brushing my shoulders off.

Yea, i've been watching the averages pretty close for the past year, even though all of the talk of restricting slots, the averages did not rise from the late part of last year when they were giving more time for application submissions due to low applicant numbers. I gotta get my pt scores up though, sitting about a 260-265 right now. Waiting to do it as one of the last things for my packet. Just finished my flight physical on Tuesday and hopefully get it back in a couple weeks. My other scores are competitive, but I don't want to leave anything to chance that I can influence. I'm just glad they didnt make me retake the ASVAB from when I first enlisted, 99 with a GT of 141 doesnt give me any way to go but down.

Congrats on the selection too! I hope to get my packet in on the next cycle and be right behind ya.

Congratulations on being selected, competition was stiff to say the least.

Competition for Commissioned Aviation was tighter this year as well, they reduced the number of Active Duty slots down by 25 to 115 for ROTC. West Point had a big reduction as well. I guess that's bound to happen when they lose an entire Airframe from the inventory. Average GPA was about 3.6 and APFT average was about 295, they don't have GT scores and only need to be above 50 on the SIFT, I think the actual average was around 65.

Son was lucky and was able to branch Aviation, second son to branch Aviation, go figure.

Good luck to all of you.
