cbarnes91
Just curious if any prior service have went back through BCT and if so how was your experience? I am going through as an E-5 prior Air Force in November and just curious what to expect. Sorry if this topic has been covered, I searched the forum but didn't see anything. Thanks. jeepster32
Where is your basic at? I'm prior Air Force, E-5 and going through Basic right now at Ft Sill. I'm in week 7 and it's easy for you. You get a different area than the others, I share a room with two other prior service. We get to keep our phones and whenever they get evicted from their bay we don't have to participate. They also treat you different, especially when you're not all around the platoon.

That doesn't sound like basic training at all lol. Im going to Ft Jackson. Thanks for the info.
jeepster32
I have no clue how it is over there, but everyone calls it relaxin jackson. So I'd guess you'll probably get similar treatment to what I've described. And it's not like what you would expect...the drill sergeants don't bother you after the first week unless you screw up. They know you know how to act so they focus on all the privates that are constantly messing up. Assuming they give you your own room, you'll love bay maintenance time...you can go catch up on sleep while everyone is cleaning their bay.
Signal2rotary
I was Air Guard, went to BCT as E5, in 2011. I went through Ft Leonard Wood, and didn't have any different treatment than the brand new PVTs. My platoon was in an open bay, instead of rooms. I did not get my phone any extra, and had to do all the training that the new recruits did. It will all depend on the drill sgts you get. CharyouTree
Basic at Jackson is all in the starship barracks. There are no private rooms to be given. Are you going to be an actual E-5 in Basic Training? I thought there was a transition course somewhere? I guess I will find out when I get hard copy orders in November....

jeepster32
You should get to wear it, I did, but that was at Ft. Sill
CO2WO
I'm an E5 at Jackson right now. My platoon's bay is in the "starship". Each starship has cadre apartments and that's where they have me. It's basically a poor man's BAQ; two beds (one half of a bunk and one wooden frame), a fridge, microwave, and a latrine/shower. Right now we're in Red phase and the only special treatment I get is my phone, separate quarters, and I can be out after lights out around the starship (hello washing machines!!!). We are just about to phase up to White phase and I will then be allowed to explore around the post in my off time and pretty much do whatever I can with the little free time they give us (e.g. see a movie on base, go to the commissary) For the most part my Company's DSs leave me alone; the other Company's DSs start to yell when they see me doing something an initial recruit shouldn't be doing (e.g. no battle buddy, out after lights out), but once I explain they just say "ok sergeant". The privates have to stand at ease when addressing me and if the DS sees them disrespecting me they will pay dearly. In the later phases I expect that to come with counseling statements too. Of course, if I make a "Private" mistake I still get put in my place, but it very rarely happens since I know what to expect and how to perform. Other than that the DSs are very chill when not around the privates or the 1SG. YMMV as far as where you sleep however, as some of the training battalions are in "temporary" barracks while construction is ongoing. There is another AF E5 here in that situation and instead of his own room he has his own bay with no one in it. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer. CharyouTree
Not everyone is in the starship barracks. And that transition course (WTC) is gone-zo. Well... I'm surprised they dropped it. I'm REALLY surprised you would have to go to BCT at all, if you're prior service going through WOCS. It just seems redundant, to me. Though apparently, it's not that big of a deal, depending. BM1
There just arn't enough prior service switching branches these days to justify an entire course staffed just for them. I do understand the need to redo bootcamp if you've come from some of the other branches. I wouldnt expect someone transitioning to the Navy to know much about firefighting, just as I wouldnt know the foundation of being a soldier. It just makes sense to stick everyone in the regular pipeline, and while alot of it is redundant, it ensures a minimum level of competency. I hope for the day when I can graduate boot camp with a full rack including campaign ribbons just for the absurdity of it.
Creep0321
When I went to Marine Recruit training we had a prior service Army E-5 Infantry guy that out-stacked all three of our drill instructors, including a bronze star-v and purple heart. At the time I thought it was entertaining haha.
