Winter months at WOCS

Recommended Posts

Going through the packing list and was curious about a few things.

I'll be at Rucker 23 NOV- 29 JAN.

  1. How cold are we talking during this time frame?
  2. Will the issued (1) IPFU Jacket and Pants be enough or should I purchase another?
  3. Is the short sleeve IPFU shirt worn under the IPFU jacket or the long sleeve? Does it matter?

For those who've attended during this time frame, please advise.

Thanks

Usually it'll be the long sleeve shirt under the jacket, especially during your timeframe. 1 each of jacket and pants should be fine (most people I knew, including myself, only had 1). The benefit to having 2 though, is that when you turn in your stuff for laundry you don't have to worry about it getting lost and being out of uniform.

I started WOCS in February and right before I showed up there apparently was snow on the ground.

I am not to sure how cold it gets in rucker, or the amount of snow. But I went through SERE in Maine in February and the best part about the course, or one of the most useful(on a day to day basis) skills I learned was winter survival. I know I wouldnt have gotten as much out of the course had I gone in the warmer months.

SERE is the worst time to go through cold weather at Rucker.

To each their own, I guess.

I went through SERE in the winter and I am extremely glad I went through in winter rather than summer. It was actually during the coldest part of winter in one of the coldest winters they've had in years (so I've been told). They even shut down post during an ice storm while I was in SERE. Yes, it was cold; No, there wasn't any food to hunt or gather; But, there also weren't banana spiders every 10 feet, snakes trying to cuddle with you, and I wasn't sweating through my ACUs all day. But, I'm one of the ones that would rather be cold than hot. Also, in the summer you have to deal with thunderstorms. No thanks!

I went through Rucker during the exact same time frame a few years ago. You'll probably be in the Orange class. I don't remember buying more than what was issued and I got issued everything at Rucker since I showed up in civvies.

We did PT in the hallway when it got too cold out. SERE was great during the spring and finished mid-May. Small victories, I guess.

Timeframes I'm looking at are:

  • 24 NOV-29 JAN for WOCS
  • 12 APR-15 MAY for AV WOBC (Part A)

So, it looks like SERE and HOST will be MAY-JUNE. Not too shabby.

May 25th is the start of my WOBC class. I wont be doing SERE again, so we might start IERW around the same time =D

  • 1 month later...

Sooo it is 70 degrees currently in South FL where I'm at. Sitting here thinking about how cold it'll be at 0400ish on the 24th of this month running that 2mi at Rucker. Looks like there's a 25 degree difference in temperature at the moment. Guess that's one of the few downfalls of living in FL-having to acclimate to a colder environment.

I felt bad for the people in SERE during last years winter. It actually snowed at Rucker last year and they shut the base down lol.

In SERE you have to do a water crossing thing with your ruck sack. And you do it whether its June or January. I spoke to a few guys who did it in January. Ouch....Miserable.

Sounds like Marine4WOFT will be in SERE around the spring time which is perfect. Don't have to worry about the killer heat index of the American deep south in the summer and won't be freezing to death in the dead of winter.

That was me, it was the single most miserable thing I've ever done.

I didn't know you could be that cold and survive. AND WHY WOULDN'T IT STOP RAINING.
