Interservice Transfer- Marine Officer to Army Warrant

Recommended Posts

While true, I thought there was some sort of program in place to keep the higher pay in place for people reverting to a lower paying grade.

It could be that it is only available for high-ranking, long-serving NCOs going warrant or getting a commission where doing so would actually cause a loss in pay.

And let's face it: the LTCs are making slides. That's what they have majors and captains for.

I'm an Active CPT that was selected to resign and fly as a Warrant. I ship to WOBC in March. The current rules for "save pay" don't apply to voluntary demotions. So I will be taking a pay cut to fly (WORTH IT). 10 days prior to my school date, I will resign my commission, and immediately be appointed a WO1. Upon reporting to Ft Rucker, I'll do a rank determination request and immediately promote to CW2. At that point I'll be on the standard promotion timeline. For NCOs who are promoting, they'll maintain their highest pay until their Warrant grade catches up.

The most assured way of accomplishing this is going to WTI, then getting the TH160 exchange skid slot. If they like you while you are there you'll be offered a chance to stay.

If you just go and enter the Army, will you still be happy with being a line dog in a cav unit? If so, go for it, but if you don't get TF, don't be that bitter guy.

Which is a big roll of the dice.

Assuming your skill and timing support a WTI spot, and your timing supports the TF160 billet opening at the time you're up for orders and post-WTI timeline. Then selected by the board, with candidates from the east and west coast who are also all WTIs. Impossible? No, but difficult to say the least - with a lot of variables you can't control.

The way Stearman explains it is that you can assess before doing an IST, and if you don't pass assessment you don't have a commitment to the Army or atleast that's the way it sounds. Not exactly clear if that is while still active, reserve, or IRR etc. That being said, benefits of the warrant route is being able to stay in the aircraft much like the USAF except with a potential pay cut.

I didn't realize they let you "try out" first. I thought you would have to work your way up from a line unit like every other Army WO.

You don't even have to work your way up from a line unit. When I was instructing they were recruiting right out of flight school. We were asked to notify them for any students that showed an interest and stood out. As if you can tell with a student with a whooping 120 hrs. Yeah, he does a mean roll on, I think he's 160th material.

That's hilarious.

Well, I will say there are certain students that you just know they're going to go on to great things. Some just have the total package and excel at whatever they do. I'm just not a believer in rushing greatness. No one at that hour level can perform to a 160th standard, especially NVGs. I'd say it took me 500 hrs of NVGs before I felt almost as comfortable operating at night as I did day. That's probably why contractors like the former Blackwater required 600 hrs NVG. Demanding training is important but I don't think it can replace years of experience.
