FRAT

Recommended Posts

I do. We don't. Most of the time when we get calls we are already flying. If it's something more involved we will either go back to the hangar or land off site and make calls via cell phone to get more info, check any weather etc.

When we do fires we get a brief from a Batt Chief usually over the radio enrt to the hangar or flying to the scene. But we rarely have conflicting aircraft. We are usually a one man helo show on our fires.

Unless you work in our environment conducting our missions, our FRAT is useless to you….. YOUR mission, environment, policy & procedures, crew, machines, experience dictate YOUR FRAT……

Don’t get wrapped up with how supposed “industry subject matter experts” believe how to best utilize a FRAT. IF, I say again, IF the required mission dictates you operate outside your normal mission profile, then you reassess. Reassessing IS mitigating risk. What you mitigate ARE the unknowns based on the specific facts at hand based in reality and NOT based on an unrealistic perception of what could happen…..

In short, cool sounding acronyms will not save lives. Decisions made by pilots based on experience and sound judgment are what prevents accidents. And, the reality is, millions of flight hours have been flown safely without the use of a FRAT………
