Flight physical question

Soooo, here comes hopefully my last roadblock.

 

I was scheduled to take my flight physical today at a nearby Air Guard base. Yesterday, upon returning from MEPS and my initial entry physical (part deux), I was informed by my recruiter that no such physical was scheduled, and that I won't be able to get one from the Air Guard until January.

So now I have two questions for all of you out there:

 

1. Does it have to be a military medical examiner? There are plenty of FAA certified AMEs out there, and I have no issue paying out of pocket for the physical if that's what it takes.

 

2. If not, then does anyone know where I can find a list of military-approved AMEs? I understand that there's one in Camp Atterbury, but I'll be damned if I can find any info on it.

 

If not, then I guess I'll start the thread for the May 2014 board. f**k.

Bro, I'm sure your frustrated.... This doesn't really answer your question but my flight physical wasn't scheduled, just a walk-in for the first portion. So if you're willing to make the drive to Atterbury go for that, if you can't find any place closer.

I'd be careful on just walking in depending on how far you'll be driving. Here in pa they are booked like a month out at all times.

Yeah. If you can find the phone number to the AME definitely call first. If you can't find the number, I believe I still have the business card to the one here. I can give you his number and maybe he'll be willing to give more information on AMEs in your area.

It's going to really hurt you when you get done with WOBC and they make you get another physical here at rucker as if by some reason your other one, that you have worked soooooooo hard to get, now means jack squat even though it's not expired yet....

Suck it up, get some beef jerky and red bull and get in the car and drive down there.

 

My entire process has been about missing one deadline after another.

Took a month to get my MEPS physical signed off on. (Had a mole removed 10 years ago, you would of thought I was missing a limb by the way MEPS acted).

 

So after that delay I found out Houston MEPS does do flight physicals....1 day a month.....the day before they called me to let me know I had been approved for the initial physical. Ugh.

 

I told my recruiter find me a place within an 8 hour drive and I'd be happy to do it. He found out that Ft. Hood did walk in's on Tuesdays if I was willing to make the drive. (Only 4 hours away so not far at all) I went up there, knocked it out and made an appointment for the next week, finished up the second part and it was sent off to Ft. Rucker on Nov 18th and signed and approved on the 19th. But that would have been too quick, so they shuffled it around for another two weeks before getting it back to me, two days after the battallion board cutoff date for December (Consistency counts I guess)

 

I'd tell your recruiter to get on the phone and find a clinic, and that you'll handle the rest. I'm sure its the same way in the Army as the Navy, in that no one will care more about your career than you will.

 

FWIW, my recruiter was able to find out that their was a clinic and they did walkins, but nothing more really than that, so I went in a little blind. I also went in with the expectation that if I showed up and was just able to make an appointment, just to find that next hoop to jump through, then it was worth the drive.

Finally I was able to get through to someone at the Missouri Guard in Jefferson City. Their appointment scheduling system is down, but I was told within the next two weeks is possible.

Made a day long trip there yesterday and got it knocked out. The ladies at TMC 5 were very helpful. Labs were clean and no issues at the other station, so the doc said I should get my stamp back in about a week.

 

It was pretty motivating seeing the SOAR flightline, too.

Nice, fwiw mine was stamped and sent back the following day. I figured it would be a little longer because of the holidays but it wasn't. Instead it sat at Ft. Hood for two weeks till they got around to emailing it to me. Maybe you'll get yours a little quicker.

You are always better off looking for an active duty installation with Aviation present. Every battalion-sized organization is assigned a flight surgeon as part of the staff. A brigade has 5-6 altogether.

Labs and tests do not have to be done the same day as the flight surgeon visit. My flight surgeons would accept labs I did 2 months prior because they were within my birth-month window, but usually there was a week in between, sometimes days. The same day was rare except for in a theater of operations or at Fort Rucker.

Hello everyone, I'm driving to Fort Irwin, California tomorrow to do the flight physical. My recruiter said it is a two day affair. I was just wondering, what happens once it's complete. Does the flight surgeon send it to Fort Rucker? We are trying to make this May board, I'm just wondering how it all gets put in the packet.

Yes, the flight surgeon is responsible for sending it to Rucker, where they process it and store it in the archive much like the one from Indiana Jones - in other words, they can easily access every physical you've ever done so think carefully before answering those 200 questions about past medical history.

Problem with that is I've been told my different people (the medical folks) that if it's been reported previously, don't bother, and then by someone else "yes, every single time". I go with every time, but it's a real pain.
