Selection today

Recommended Posts

I understand selection basics. I am just wanting to know if all the Warrant Officers wanted Apaches or were they just given to them in this particular class. Every Warrant Officer in the class wanting to fly Apaches just seems a little too coincidental.

Supposedly about 7 out of the 11 wanted Apaches, the rest didn’t have a choice in the matter.

This selection was a true case of needs of the Army. As for the numbers of who wanted what, only about 4 of us wanted 64s. There were 3 that were working really hard to get 47s and the other 4 had their hearts set on 60s. In regards to OML, the number 1 Warrant in the class was a Guard guy and already knew what he was getting.

It still goes by the OML, but about a week or 2 before selection you put your choices ranked 1-4 in the computer system. Then the cadre go through and assign your airframe based off available platforms and your choices in OML order.

For example: They have a list of available platforms, and the list of student choices. The #1 wants C12 they look at the list of aircraft and find there is a C12 available, #1 gets it. #2 also wants C12, they look at the list and find there are no more C12s so they see what #2s second choice is, its 47s and there are 47s left on the list #2 gets their second choice of 47s. This goes on for the rest of the class OML. Then on Selection day they announce the #1 warrant and #1 LT then the rest in alphabetical order.

Seems pretty fair to me.

Haha yeah seems pretty fair until they hit your class with a needs of the army like my class and completely landslide the majority of the class (if not the whole class) to a certain aircraft. They have been doing it pretty hard lately to the LTs going to 60s and as with my class, Warrants to 64s.

It would happen regardless of whether they stuck with the traditional selection day choices or this new system. The same aircraft spread will be available for that specific class no matter which method is used.

Yeah but you know what you're getting in to- that's the military. I worked my ass off for a top spot in "A" school so I could pick my next duty location, only to get hit with "needs of the service" for something never before seen. Everyone else got their number one pick. Murphy's law.

I disagree. Why change the format then? Change of command at USAACE and within a week we saw this implemented. It seems like somebody is trying to tackle the shortage from the back-end by bulk filling classes that are starting soon? We might never know why, but I don't think it is at all the same.

I was told that they changed it because selection day is a huge family event. They dont want to embarrass someone who is low on the OML, which is why they call them out alphabetically.

Where do you think they get the available airframe choices from? They don’t just make them up at random for each class, they are based on forecast class slots available which won’t change whether everyone picks one at a time from the board or assignments are made automatically from the list.
