What a fine institution.

Business as usual on Monday, doors closed FOREVER on Tuesday...can't wait!!!

First they used the banks, now the government. Can you imagine what the folks at Silver State would have done with this? They did try. Unlike SSH, they actually wanted you to finish as they didn't get your cash up front. That's the only difference. But just like SSH, the bottom fell out when the free money dried up. This is what some called a "good business plan". This GI bill thing was as unsustainable as SSH (how long did they think they could bill the government a half a mil to get someone to a CFI?) Take the money and run. These guys knew it couldn't last.

As of yesterday ULA stopped accepting veterans to their flight program. They went over their 85/15 percentages and the VA caught em! About time

The flight companies say the helicopter industry is dominated by older pilots who learned to fly in the military during the Vietnam War and that their retirements will result in a national shortage of pilots.

As much as I enjoy hearing this one year after year, at least the guy who wrote this article acknowledged that FAA data doesn't support it. Edited by eagle5

"Reid said she encourages students to train in the more expensive, sophisticated helicopters because that is the type of training demanded by employers who offer good jobs to the veterans."

I wonder where these 200 hour pilots got these $50,000-90,000 a year jobs?

With emphasis on the word “cool”……

And sure, it’s cool to have some turbine time but that’s all it is, -cool…..

Spike,

You never thought flying a helicopter would be "cool" before you tried? You were more like, "how lame is that", I think I will try it out? Just looking for clairity....

Please read the sentence, and the entire thread for that matter, more thoroughly….

“And sure, it’s cool to have some turbine time but that’s all it is, -cool…..”

This statement was to rebuff the opinion that turbine helicopter flight training is necessary to gain entry-level employment, which it is not. And, to answer your question; sure, when I was an aspiring helo-pup I thought it would be cool to fly helicopters for a living. However, through my career, I’ve seen various pitfalls which unsuspecting students would fall into…. Like, paying for turbine time before they even qualify for a piston pilot position…. That’s just a waste of money…. And, time…..

What I don't understand is how they are able to appear as though they are still up ad running as if nothing is going on? Are they just pretending, or are they really still up and running as they were before? They also opened up a new location in California. I see tons of vets asking questions on their FB about how to start training, etc. They answer questions and refer them to "Student Services".

Does anyone know if they really are able to continue with this? The pictures clearly show their turbines in the hangars, so it appears that they are still in operation, status quo even.

The VA has cracked down some at my school. Previously we were able to do flight minors for those that did not have flight majors. My school is completely fine with the 85/15 rule but at somepoint last semester the VA no longer was allowing flight minors but they told no one at my university or flight school.

Temecula Ca huh? I used to live there. Sad thing is there is already a small mom and pop helicopter school there that's been around 15-20yrs. I hope ULA doesn't tank them and then fold up. They are strategically located near Camp Pendelton for a reason im sure.

Perhaps I should pitch my new idea to mom and pop. Its a postgraduate program where you can get a Masters Degree in SFAR 73. There are just 4 classes;

1. Make Me Hireable - 50 hours in the r22 since I can't find work as a turbine cfii. (lab course)

2. Ethics

3. Real World Finance - Where free money actually comes from.

4. Reality Check - Finding the best second job because my dream job doesn't pay the bills.

Think the VA will pay for it?

I knew eventually someone would take the "don't you dare say anything bad about the poor vets!" route. News for ya, I am a vet. 2 combat tours, Purple Heart, and plenty of lost brothers. Nobody on this thread ever said that vets don't deserve this training, in fact I believe we are all saying the opposite. We want the greed to stop so that all future veterans will have the same incredible opportunity. I cannot make it more clear than that. There is one thing that I find interesting, and it validates my point that vets are part of the problem:

The only people who seem to want these greedy schools to be left alone..........are vets!

Let that sink in. Veterans screwing future veterans for their own shortsightedness (which they don't seem to understand will not get them any further up the ladder than I, who trained in a S300 and R44).

Terminal_velo: Excellent points, and very well spoken!

MikeMV, thank you for your excellent and informative contribution as always.

Full Disclosure: I hate to admit it, but I was once blinded and dazzled by what ULA was offering. I was very close to enrolling there. Thankfully my conscience pointed the way. I could not be moving along in my career any more satisfactorily, and all without training in an Astar. Go figure.

Where did you go to school at? Ive been contacted from ULA and Guidance in Baton Rouge. Im trying to do the right thing here and get my degree as well to fully use my benefits. Any recommendations?
