Upper Limit Aviation veterans on hold

So apparently, Upper Limit Aviation has so many veterans taking flight classes that they closed the doors to veterans wanting to attend flight school as of today. They said you could attend the school academically, but not to fly. For at least a year if not more. I was looking into this school so anyone else that's interested just know ahead of time they are over their (VA's) 85/15 percentage of veterans to civilians for training.

Kojack, I think you need to go through some other threads on here and read up. Look at: what a fine institution". You should be staying as far away from that place as possible. In fact, you might want to hold off on enrolling in anything until the dust settles. It is likely to change how, or even if, you will be getting flight training at all.

I was calling/applying to several schools and their (ULA) admissions counselor called me and said that this had just happened. Seems a few schools have difficulty abiding by the 85/15 rule. Now im looking at a few others, feel free to chime in with reviews:

 

1.Leading Edge Aviation-Bend, Oregon

2. Middle Georgia State College- Eastman, Ga....This one is close to my home

3. Guidance Aviation-Prescott, Arizona. I've heard mixed reviews about this last one. I've been accepted though so who knows. I might be packing bags soon. Hope this helps

where did you find out about this?

I applied to the school and after two weeks a counselor contacted me by phone and said due to the 85/15 rule the school can no longer accept applicants that are using the GI bill because they are over their limit. Soooo off to another school for me!

 

Not a big deal btw, I heard they overcharge students for unnecessary training at ULA. I would rather go to one closer to home thats cheaper and save some money for the next veteran that wants to fly. Whos know, $100k saved here and there can make a difference.

There's definitely more to this story. I knew when their "Director of Military Outreach" came to my base selling myself and other veterans who were transitioning out of the military an illusory/fantastic plan, which we in law enforcement call a pipe-dream, something wasn't right. Glad I held off on signing on with them and hate that so many other veterans bit.

I went to Lake Superior Helicopters in Duluth, MN. I paid out of pocket. They have 141 and Degree programs but train in 22's and 44's. (used to fly 300's... the good old days) They now offer "Turbine Transition" and "long-line" courses which no guy paying out of pocket would think twice about doing, (correct me if I'm wrong) but they stuck to the 85/15 rule honestly while I was there.

Yea out of pocket definitely puts this in perspective for people on what's really needed to fly. I did my first flight in a Schweitzer 300 today. Got ahold of the controls....man what a handful especially hovering. Mad respect to the pilots here

I teach at Silverhawk Aviation in Caldwell Idaho. We have a very successful VA program through TVCC. Infact we have the lowest cost per Student training in the area, our last CFI hired from the VA program completed the whole thing for under 100k. Including mountain flying, long line, turbine transition, and all his ratings in Robinsons.

 

Not every school is trying to cash in, some of us are here to train.

Get rid of that turbine transition and we can get it back down to under $80k!

 

I agree, let the oil/lumber companies pay for that. Basic schooling is all that needs to be covered.

As a Veteran...and also as a VA employee who works in the Education Dept here in Muskogee.....I have seen quite a few schools taking advantage of Govt (VA) funding....so I am glad and proud of you guys at Silverhawk Aviation who are supporting the veterans and not trying to just line your pockets!.....You guys keep up the good work!

I am one of the administrators for my school as well and we have always run a lean program. This Upper Limit business and all of the fallout is killing the program at our community college. The VA has imposed changes that make it virtually impossible for veterans to train without substantial financial aid.

 

I have mixed feelings about the effect it will have on the industry as a whole, but from the standpoint of getting our veterans the benefits they deserve, it's appalling. From a flight instructor standpoint, it makes it incredibly stressful getting these guys through in the bare minimums when the averages are so much higher than minimums even for private pay students. It's cause our school's check-ride failure rate to spike.
