Do most Army soldiers want aviation?

Recommended Posts

So i've been running 3 to 4 times a week ...my neighbor who used to coach hs baseball said i should spend at least one day doing a slow jog with max sprints in between....so if I was running on a track i'd sprint the straightaways, jog the curves etc. I'm going to try this, but one thing i'm starting to deal with is shin splins...has anyone had these and if so should i still keep running even though it hurts a little or would that make it worse? Ive heard different things, like the hs coach said if i continue running a lot i could eventually get a stress fracture but at the same time i don't want to fall back in my routine.

Do you own a pair of running shoes? I used to get SP all the time when I was running in sneakers, but once I got a good pair or running shoes they went away for the most part.

It's also probably better to work on distance first, then worrying about speed. Longer, slower jogs are probably going to help you more right now as opposed to shorter sprints.

Serious question, when you take the APFT (in my case as a civilian), do you do the 2 mile run on a track or are you running from point A to point B?

Just depends. I've done both.

When you start to feel shin splints, pause the running and hit up the elliptical, bicycle, and swimming. Go for a light jog after a week and see how you feel. If good, continue your running. You don't want to get a stress fracture, it will set you back way further than taking a week or two off from running.

Continue this recipe as needed.

yes i was thinking about doing some swimming at the Y...that's a good idea.

thank you Lindsey

Right now all i have are some hightops which really arent even running shoes and soles are going inward because they are so worn

went to the Y today to get in the water... I really can't swim at all but i can tread water pretty good and this older guy probably in his 50s or 60s told me to aqua jog. I wasn't sure what he was talking about at first but after he showed me it turned out to be awesome...its basically the same thing as running but in water...you lean forward in water and then you pump your arms and legs to tread through it....but the water has to be deep like 6-7 ft or else it wont work....it sounds kinda goofy but it works great and you use pretty much all your main mucles...and the best thing for me is that it took the pressure off my shins which have been hurting a lot

If/when you get a pair of good running shoes, make sure you're going to a reputable store where they can analyze your foot and stride and make recommendations on a shoe type. Not all running shoes are created equal and your foot's structure plays a large role in what type you need to get. Also, I wouldn't suggest going for the cheapest shoes available. Consider these an investment and your feet will thank you later.

I was thinkin my next check or two spending about 50 or 60 bucks on some running shoes. I don't think I can spend more than that ... I'm wondering if that gets me a good pair... I'm just really low on money with helping out my mom etc. I volunteer a fews hours a week at Y so i get a free limited pass which is super helpful

I was thinking maybe Asics gel shoes? Or Nike running shoes?

Nike has sh*t quality. You want Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, etc... Go to a store that specifically sells running shoes, not a generic sporting good store. They'll analyze your stride and help you find the right shoe for you.

Go to a real running store like Cav said and get your stride tested and a recommendation. Then take that info and look around at cheaper places for the shoes they recommended. It's kind of shitty to that higher end store but f**k it, not everyone can afford that. You have to do what you have to do.

If you don't have a store like that, set up your cell phone behind you to record video of you running on a treadmill for 20 seconds. (Framed from just above the knee including your whole stride) www.runningwarehouse.Com has a section where you can submit the video and they will make recommendations for you. Then Google the shoes, or coupons for running warehouse and buy them. Simple, I did it from kuwait.

The right shoes make a huge difference in how you feel during and after a run. If you don't have a good shop around to advise you, at the very least do some on-line research before you spend a penny.

P.S. Learn to swim!!! Forget the Johnny Weismuller crawl unless you want to workout. Learn the breast and back strokes, anybody can do those for hours.

There's another good question... So there's trail running as well? Not just pounding concrete? I'll need new shoes.

Beaver "lake" used to have some good running trails. All paved in the woods. Used to have some good dirt trails behind the BOQ as well. Decent hills for such a flat place.

Which begs the the question, any good motorcycle roads down there?
