Do most Army soldiers want aviation?

Recommended Posts

Wally, did you read this thread in its entirety?

From the beginning. The OP is as irritatingly callow as any kid I've ever met. That condition can be cured, painful as it may be, and I think Shindig will live through it. I think he has the proverbial snowball's chance at this point of flying in a green suit. Maybe never, but if he doesn't quit... The Army has made soldiers out of less likely kids.

Now take this with a grain of salt. I'm just a kid and my experience in flying is laughable, so my opinion might not mean much, but nobody who keeps track and posts to this thread regularly is really agitated anymore. In fact, the majority of people commenting here are doing it for laughs, while the minority wants the thread to burn and die as fast as possible.

I'm not in the Army, or the military, but from what I've seen there's a big culture set around joking/humor. You can see that in real life, and on the internet. 11b's ribbing any other MOS for being too easy, and these aviators ribbing Shindig for what he has said in this thread. He has shown to not have a thick skin, and I'm going on a hunch and saying that you might need that if you want to become an officer in the Army.

While immaturity can be cured, which it will. His attitude will only be masked. The fact that he said he's doing this because it's the easiest of any branch is the prime example. You might see why they don't want him to join as an officer right off the bat. He has some growing to do. His attitude will take a long time to change, and if your co-pilot said he's only there because it's easy, would you really want him as your co-pilot?

TL/DR. Not fit to be an officer right now, should honestly enlist first instead.

guys i read some of your comments and i want to be in the army more than just helmets etc that you said velocity ... its about the armys mission too thats most important

so anyways I got my first letter today and sooner then expected but he addressed it to the dept of the army....is it good to do that or should it be Dear Sir or Dear Mam? if it should be changed i can let him know and he said he will change

his letter to me is about 2 paragraphs and talks about my hard work as a volunteer etc and how relentless i am and focused in my goals and that he would recommend me for the army flight school without reservations ...so i think its really good but just want to make sure i have it titled the way it should be

So, do most Army solders want aviation? In 38 pages I never noticed if the title question was ever answered?

Yes. I conducted a survey a few years back and 67 % of enlisted soldiers wanted to be Army Aviators. I also concluded that the other 33 % were liars and actually wanted to fly.

This sounds a lot like that actual survey they did a few years back that found that officers are happier than enlisted personal

Nope not true. I'd much rather sleep in tents out in the woods for training, instead of TDY in a nice hotel :)

I've been in 7 years and I spent 3 years guard. Being an engineer I've always heard aviation guys have it nice. I don't believe it all. How are field exercises? What's a bad experience some of you've had? While I was guard I had it nice. Being in the field during our AT it still felt like a 9-5 job. Active duty complete opposite.

In theater? Same B-huts / trailers / tents that the ground guys use.

FTX? Could be a crappy barracks but I've done the tent thing, both 2 man and GP on a few occasions. Generally those FTXs were 3 weeks at a time. Obviously field chow halls / MREs.

Also flown around with camo paint on my face during an FTX because the BN CDR wanted it that way.😏

Still, if you compare it to ground units you're not spending nearly as much time in the field and not on foot patrol while there. So yeah, Army Aviation does "rough it" occasionally but you still have it relatively good.

Every job has it perks, in aviation we don't go to the field as much/ it's a little less roughing it, but our promotions are usually not as fast as combat arms. That's just one example. I think it all comes down to the individual. For me I like fixing broke sh*t, so aviation maintenance was a no brainer.

I knew an Army 1st Lt. who did an IST to the AF and said the lifestyle was much more relaxed and cushy. I never knew officers could IST to the AF? Is this common?

I knew maybe 6 who did interservice to ANG. They now fly C-130, C-5, KC-135 & HH-60s. Knew a couple who went active (A-10s) as well. Those two had to start from day one at flight school.

Of course there's the whole CG thing as well. They're full of transfers. They do an abbreviated AOCs / flight school. Went out to see my buddy a few months ago that flys 60s for them. He's former Army and he introduced me to two other pilots. One was former Army (OH-58) and the other was former Marine (C-130).

He was actually not even a flyer. He was an Infantry Officer and was able to IST as an Officer in the AF. So I guess non-aviation guys have made the switch. Do ISTs still happen even today for either aviation or non-av commissioned guys? I know enlisted have done it, but seems rare for AV/commissioned?

I knew plenty of pilots who would have loved to IST just not many who actually did the legwork to put in for an IST. They either wanted a better quality of life, wanting to fly a different airframe or just tired of Army policies. All the ones that I knew who were serious about transferring got accepted. Never heard of anyone getting turned down.
