Which gate should I live by

Recommended Posts

Definitely not Daleville. I would suggest living in Enterprise or on post if possible. My wife and myself are living on post and it's nice to our standards. Plus it's nice when you have to be at the bus at 0330 and can wake up 15 minutes prior and make it on time.

I live outside the daleville gate and i really like it. Takes me 7 minutes to get to PT in the morning. Almost everyone lives outside of the enterprise gate though. I just got lucky with a new place. I know a few people got really really cheap places outside of ozark but they are far and few between.

On post, it's great, we love it and those 30 minute lunches you have between class and flight is just enough time to come home and make a sandwich instead of eating fast food all the time

There's some really nice houses around shell field (BWS airfield... If I were to buy and rent I'd do it there. It's north enterprise and uses the Faulkner gate I think? I can't remember the name of the dang gate right now but there's always very minimal traffic there. I'd use google earth and zoom in and look because sharing locations and mileages for base ops is borderline OPSEC

Everybody forgets Level Plains (Enterprise address). It's the best of all worlds. Just a few minutes to the Enterprise gate, just a few minutes to the Daleville gate. Easy drive to Wal-Mart area, easy drive to Dothan. For those that don't know, it borders Freedom Drive, where the largest percentage of flight school students live anyway. If you have kids you can choose Daleville or Enterprise schools (choose Enterprise). Several houses being built, for rent, for sale.

I live off Rucker Blvd about 5 miles away from the Enterprise gate. I think it's pretty centrally located to everything. It takes me about 15 min to get to the B Co PT field in the morning. About 12 minutes to get to B Co. Lowe Field is pretty quick as well. Don't forget you not only have to get to Rucker, but the sim building in Daleville and Shell Field for BWS.

How bad is the gate traffic on the Enterprise side? I realize its probably non existent for the 0330 flight line calls, but what about for standard duty days?

Also, once through the Enterprise gate, how far is it to where we generally meet up?

I should mention my wife and I are looking to buy a house, then rent it out when we leave.

I dont think there is a standard duty day In flight school.

I believe houses are easiest to rent out in enterprise near the gate. I have had a rental for the past 8 years at Rucker and it's never been vacant for more than a month. Maybe it's just luck on my part but it seems enterprise, ft rucker Blvd is the hot spot for renters.

If you want my opinion, living on post is great for time and convience but it's a bit dumpy and your party life, if you're in to that is gonna be shot.

Gate "traffic" at its absolute worst is no more than a 3 minute wait. People must just be impatient or never have had to deal with traffic before. It's seriously a non-issue.

  • 4 months later...

Convenience to post: (1) ON POST (2) Daleville not too far from the gate (3) Out the Ozark gate in the vicinity of or or not out as far as Hooper.

Shortest drive to WOC area (1) On post (2) Daleville not too far from the gate and some of those could be even closer than on post if your quarters were kind of "out there".

In the days when I went to Flight School, we didn't get to live off post until we were about half way through and then the guys in our flight (started with 45, graduated with 28....15 of which were original members of the flight as we did acquire a few "setbacks") moved to a lot of different places and I never really heard any of them griping.

Nicest area OFF POST (1) Lots of Enterprise (2) some parts of Ozark (but a long drive), some parts of Daleville.

When I was in the first part of flight school I lived kind of behind the Chevy dealer in some apartments in Enterprise and that wasn't too bad, convenience wise, but kind of a long drive. Later I sort of bought out all the stuff one of the guys in the flight owned when his wife left him (called DESERTION in AL, at least in those days) and took over his rented house just south of Hooper Stage Field's traffic pattern. Not too bad a dive and didn't take too long. When I went back to Rucker to be an IP at Lowe, I bought a house in the south end of Ozark out near the airport. Prices not bad, drive could be a little long to/through the Ozark gate and then around north through the woods to Lowe....but I rode a motorcycle most of the time and liked the ride.
