Delaying PCS due to special circumstances?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are going to be PCSing soon from Fort Rucker to our first duty station as me being an pilot. I know it's different for everyone but how long is everyone typically stationed at a duty station on average? My wife is seeking to apply to a medical school in the area of where we are PCSing and it will take about 5 years to complete her program. If I came down on orders to PCS prior to her completing her program could I talk to the command and/or HRC and them work with us until she's complete?

I've been in the army and stationed at the same duty station for the past 5 years prior to flight school so this will be new to us. I understand the needs of the army and everything. I also have heard from IPs about people staying at one duty station for 5 or 6 years, although I'm not sure how common this is. Thanks for any information you can provide us to figure this dilemma out!

Are all ex 47 FEs who fly 64s this needy? Just messin.

The last I heard was the Army was going back to 3-5 year tours CONUS. If you desire to stay in one location I would make sure your branch manager knows this and why prior to being put on assignment instructions to avoid any issues. Possible worse case scenario is you do a 12 month overseas unaccompanied tour while your wife stays in place. This could ensure duty assignment of choice in return back to where your wife is at school. I've seen a few pilots pull this off Hondo or Korea in your case.

Questions regarding the manning cycle I will defer to the more experienced WOs who have PCS'dand dealt with their respective branch managers.

What the is window both CONUS and OCONUS? When should we be looking at the next duty location? 1 year out? 18 months?
