Introduction for Mavuska

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

My name is Mavrick, I'm 24 years old, and I am currently an active duty SSgt in the Air Force. I have been in the Air Force for five years now. Initially, I was an avionics maintainer on C-130's but eventually decided to retrain and now I'm a Training Manager.

The reason I decided to join this forum was so I could soak in as much information as possible in regards to the Warrant Officer application process, as well as having a place were I could ask questions here and there.

I originally heard about Army Warrant Officers a few years ago as a young Airman. When I learned that you could apply to become a pilot without a degree or flying experience, I was all beside myself. I looked into the requirements but didn't exactly fit the bill, so I decided to wait it out a little bit.

Now, here I am. Ready to begin the arduous journey of the application process. I know it sounds corny but I want nothing more than to become an Army aviator and fly "Above the Best".

Thanks guys.

You could say I've started the packet, but I'm not too far into it. I still need to get the LOR's and make contact with a SWO who's willing to work with me. I spoke with a CW4 who flies C-12's but he's in Egypt so he was a little hesitant. He did offer some good advice and some insight on WOCS though. I also need to redo my flight physical. I say redo because I had one done previously but it's expired now. And finally, I need to take the SIFT. After I get all of those ducks in a row, I should have everything else that I need.

I didn't think that I fit the bill a few years ago because I didn't have any education, leadership experience, time in service, those sort of things.

Edit: Oh yeah, all of my PT tests have been in the 90's. I'm not sure what that equates to for the Army.

Welcome! I'm Air Force as well, and I'm hoping to meet the September board.

Put in some quality study time before you take the SIFT. Effectively, you get one shot at it and your score counts for life. Don't just study until you think you're ready, study until you know you're ready.

The Army PT test may surprise you. I scored a 263 on the APFT (not great, but I'm busting my butt to bring my score up), and four days later I scored a 96.7 on the Air Force PT test. They're different animals.

As far as finding a SWO, keep running down every possible lead. I chased a couple leads to no avail, and then I found a CW4 who happened to work just down the street from me. Also, keep in mind that leads may take time to develop. I submitted my packet to a recruiter, who submitted it to a friend at an aviation unit. I didn't hear anything for a month, and then a CW4(P) called my office.

Welcome um, maverick? :) channeling top gun? :) I'm civilian. Army doubles everything: 2 min PU 2 min SU and 2 mile run. No points for abd circumference (that's part of the score for AF right?). You got plenty of time to up your test scores if you need to. I did a full PT test at least 3 times a week for about 2 months with significant rest period in between before taking the test with the recruiter.

Did you get your flt phys with the AF or Army?

Oh, trust me, I'm chasing any lead I can. The CW4 I spoke with that's in Egypt, I found on Instagram and messaged via Facebook.

So you're working with a recruiter? How can they help you other than scheduling you to take the SIFT and getting your GT score?

My dad's first car was a Ford Maverick, or so he claims.

And you're correct, we get 20 points alone for the abdominal circumference.

My flight physical was with the AF. In 2013 I was selected to retrain into Airborne ISR Operator, but due to sequestration I'm guessing, the AF cancelled several hundred retraining packages.

Copy. You have to pass a Class 1A flight physical by an Army flight surgeon. I don't think AF physicals would be adequate for the packet (I could be wrong). I would suggest working with an army recruiter or go to a warrant officer briefing to network and find some specifics about the process (us little civilian long-haired outsiders aren't good enough for the briefings  ). You been through the USAREC site yet? good info for sister service applicants.

My local recruiter pulled a REDD report for me, conducted my APFT (since it has to be conducted by an Army E-7 or above), and forwarded my packet to an aviation unit for consideration.

I called the nearest Army education center to schedule the SIFT, but I'm sure a recruiter can help you schedule the test if you don't have a nearby Army installation.

Most recruiters are very helpful. They may not know everything about the application process, but they're usually resourceful. As long as you know exactly what you need (check the USAREC site that Won2Be linked above), a recruiter should be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Just an update.

I got a copy of my REDD Report from the local Army Recruiting office. My GT score is 125, so I guess that's decent.

I also took my flight physical last week. No issues, just waiting to hear back from Fort Rucker now.

Also, does anyone know if an official Air Force photo in my blues will suffice as the DA photo?

Yes take the photo in you full service dress uniform. Ensure the ribbons match what is on your ERB. I had to go to an Army post to get the DA photo done because they no longer had the software on base. Check with your base PA office or where they take your passport picture.
