Obamas policy about overtime affecting heli pilots?

Recommended Posts

So I don't want this to turn into a political battle about who is right or who is wrong, I simply want to know everyone's opinion about how this proposal could affect helicopter pilots in the industry making less than 50K a year.

Basically, salaried workers who make less than 50K per year can gain overtime benefits for working more than 40 hours a week. It seems like most tour operators and some flight schools work off a daily salary so I don't know if they will fall into this category or if it's only for those people on yearly salaries. For 135 pilots can work 14 hour duty days and even with only 4 days a week they could easily overtake 40 hours a week. Same goes for a lot of flight schools which have pilots on staff and at work making a daily rate and keep pilots in the building for most of the day. Just curious if anyone thinks this will affect our industry.

My flight school paid me per billable hour, so not salary. Working a 5/2 at an entry level 135 operator like Papillon you'd be making over 50k.

I don't think it'll have much of an effect on us particularly. How many pilots make less than 50k?
