USAF E to USA WO

Post selection update.

For anyone following and especially for any Inter-service folks who want an example of what happens post selection, here is my experience:

14-18 March - Selected on the March 2016 board.

24 March - MILPER 16-086 is published. On the phone with the wife when I opened the message, she cried :).

5 April - Received class reservations for phase one and two of WOCS and WOBC in my us.af.mil email. WOCS report date is 12 October.

13 April - Received instructions for inter-service transfer via email (us.af.mil) from USAREC. Recommend reading and being familiar with USAREC Message 13-004. It gives you 10 days from receipt of the instructions to contact a local Army recruiter for processing. I contacted them same day and went in to talk about the process etc. They had no idea how the process worked and we all had a lot of questions. Thankfully the recruiters at the office I went to were motivated and cool to work with.

14 April-5 May - The local recruiters are instructed by said message to load you into the standard recruit system for submission to MEPS. For them to be able to do this you need to provide them everything. *coughs to clear throat* EVERYTHING! All schools and transcripts, all jobs in the last ten years, all addresses in the last ten years, POCs and their addresses at all of the above, speeding tickets, George Washington's favorite color, SS Cards/Birth Certs of dependents, marriage license, divorce decrees, diplomas/degrees, passports even if expired, flight physical, APFT scorecard, current security clearance, DD form 368 AND the Approved Contingent release email from AFPC (Air Force Personel Center; this acts as your DD 214 so the Army can send you to MEPS) and several other things...just bring it all. You also have to sign several documents. Bringing your entire packet helps.

Loading all of the above and making my 'go to MEPS' packet took about three weeks. The recruiters made the packet with the information I provided and sent it off to several other recruiting offices to get reviewed before sending it to MEPS. Have all of your stuff ready so if/when the recruiter calls you and says 'hey I need X' you can get it to them same day.

6 May - My packet is finished and submitted to MEPS with a proposed MEPS date of 18 May.

7-12 May - MEPS reviewed my packet and after some fencing with my recruiter (saying I needed a full MEPS performed physical, which you do not IAW USAREC Message 13-004) they approved the date.

18 May - I went to MEPS today and apart from taking a personality test (the TAPAS, as mine was expired from when I entered the USAF) I just talked to the guidance counselors and confirmed everything. The folks I worked with at MEPS were really cool and motivated, however this whole process was new to them too. Once they were ready they called 'The Rock' (some acronym for the nebulous recruiting entity who gives you the final approval and ship date). The Rock approved my packet and gave me a BCT date of 12 July at Fort Benning after roughly an hour of questions about 'what is this inter-service transfer WOFT nonsense?!' (note: they initially said 11 July, this is a Monday meaning I would have to ETS the USAF on the Friday prior making the break in service exceed 24 hours, IAW USAREC Message 13-004 you are not to have more than a 24 hr break in service. I brought this up and they bumped my ship date to 12 July like it was nothing). I am now Active Duty USAF and in the US Army Delayed Entry Program....yup.

I talked to AFPC a while back and was instructed to take the documents I was given at MEPS (a shipping reservation) and submit it to them so they can now project me in the system to ETS the day prior (11 July). So I'll do that tomorrow and start out processing next week.

Anyways, so that's it, selected 18 March and ship to basic 12 July. ~4 months. Started to pursue my packet in May15 shipping to basic Jul16, and now it begins!

Brightshadow,

That's the most informative post/info I have received to date. I'm AD NAVY and will be starting all of that soon as I was selected in the May Board. Did they answer anything about how basic is going to be? Are maintaining your current rank ( not that it matters really)? Just find it funny that I'm going back to basic as an E-5 but also know that I have a lot to learn about the Army so I'm looking forward to it.

I think asking if you retain your current pay is a valid question. A question which I would love to know the answer to as well. I have a wife and kids that depend on my paycheck and cannot afford to loose, while I'm in Army Basic Training if I peruse this program.

I'm also Active duty Air Force. Currently TSgt (E-6). I was selected in May and will be going through the process of transitioning soon. As far as pay goes, if you are an E-5 or above you will keep your current pay grade through basic and WOCS. If you are an E-4 or below, you will basically get promoted to E-5 pay through basic and WOCS. This info is based on Warrant Officer recruiting briefings I have attended. Feel free to correct me if you guys have heard different. I don't know that we will actually wear the rank going through training, but it's the pay I was concerned with, and keeping my current grade is all I needed to know. Feel free to ask any other questions, I may have already asked them and can give you an answer. It's been a 3 year process for me personally. I applied in 2014/15 and was passed over twice. I waited a year to re-apply and was picked up first time around in May.

Gentlemen, at MEPS you are given a shipping reservation and it will state that you are prior service entering the Army at the grade of what you are now, so mine says E-4. I'm confident you will enter Basic getting Paid as an E-5 but being called a trainee (or whatever you are called in basic). Ultimately I won't know for sure just what I am being paid in basic until I'm there and check my account, hopefully there are no issues as I suspect there won't be. I've got a wife and two kids as well who I am responsible for and its hard to focus on training/the mission if something is wrong with them so I agree, pay is very important.

I've been told the Army has done away with any special kind of basic for prior service folks, like being in a special platoon or company full of Prior service WOCS/OCS candidates (also the warrior transition course is gone). So it sounds like we are just in normal run-of-the-mill basic. I'll post on here once I know more, like a post or mid-basic update. If I get there and things are different I'll let ya'll know first chance I get. I've got a lot to learn about to Army too, and am looking forward to it as well.

Wanted to add that on the day you enlist double-triple check your contract to ensure your pay-grade is the same, be a shame to temporarily demote yourself because you were in a hurry.

You'll be getting paid the grade that are, plus family separation pay, plus BAH for the zip code your family is in. There's a pay table online and a BAH calculator online. That will help you with a ballpark number.

I was AD Air Force E-5 when selected and went to Ft Sill for Basic. Where you go depends on your treatment in basic. You keep your current pay grade, and I wore SGT rank in basic along with another interservice transfer. We got a room where they put the reservist drill sergeants when they come for their annual training, and we got to keep our phones in our rooms. The DS addressed us by our rank, and we didn't really get messed with. I don't think there is a set standard on how they treat you, because at other places I had friends that were put in the bays with everyone else. You're going to want to kill every one of them because the level of immaturity is ridiculous.

I'm a week out from finishing BCT at Benning. I'm an E-6 coming over from the Navy.

Most of this information is accurate except you will not be getting FSA and you also lose BAS while you're here. I've had my phone the whole time except for the first 72.

I get treated like a f@%$ing private most of the day, but in the evenings and on Sunday get left alone. I do have my own bay with another prior service guy so I don't have to deal with the privates all the time. I do have to share a latrine and laundry room with them but it's not that bad.

Couple of tips:

Save a pair of socks for the final ruck march or buy some of the nicer ones. It's ten miles...

Get some moleskin and put it on your elbows when you do nic at night.

There is a shuttle that will run you around base on Saturday and Sunday so you can avoid the taxis.

Roll with the punches and try to be a good example for the privates and the drills are more likely to leave you alone.

Hope some of this helps.

Yes the tattoo memo is required. There's a sister service example on the website. As for the checklist, I just went to my CSS and had them sign off. If you don't have a CSS then I'm sure if you explain it to MPF that they will hook you up.

Done with SERE and starting CC for Lakotas on the 16th. Anyone with Lakota study material they wouldn't mind parting with or some good advice please feel free to send them my way. Message for my contact info!

Is it normal to feel nervous and even inadequate prior to starting common core? I'm excited to start but I also feel pretty nervous.

Following this. I'm currently a TSgt working on my packet. The only thing I have left is my physical on Tuesday and my CCs LoR and a SWO LoR. I'm currently in a fight with AFPC to get released though.

What your AFSC? I'm SF and had my request get denied at AFPC last year. I'm waiting for a medical waiver; then I'll meet all requirements and I'll resubmit the request. I'm also a TSgt, coming up on 12 yrs TIS.

I'm a Crew Chief. The email said that crew chiefs' manning is healthy, however maintenance as a whole is low manned so they won't release me. I'm going through my local mpf now. And my CC said he'd fight the bean counters if need be
