Search underway for missing helicopter east of Baffin Island
Search crews have been dispatched in the Davis Strait between Canada and Greenland
Dense fog and thick ice are hampering a search for a missing helicopter in the Davis Strait, off the east coast of Baffin Island flown by Russian pilot Sergey Ananov.
Ananov was travelling in a Robinson R-22 helicopter from Iqaluit, Nunavut to Greenland Saturday morning when the Canadian Forces Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax received information about a marine distress broadcast reporting a missing helicopter.
The JRCC confirms they are looking for a helicopter with the registration call sign D-HDIM, the same aircraft Ananov was spotted refueling at the Iqaluit airport on Friday.
Two Hercules search and rescue aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter from 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia were dispatched to join the search. A Transport Canada patrol plane and a fishing boat that was in the area are also involved in the search.
Ananov is attempting to fly solo around the Arctic Circle in a helicopter weighing less than one tonne. He was making a stop in Iqaluit before flying to Greenland, a distance of more than 800 kilometres.
Major Martell Thompson, a spokesperson for the JRCC, said the helicopter was reported overdue at 3:20 p.m. ET Saturday.

He should have done what that "Amelia Rose Earhart" woman did. Do his flight in a brand new PC12 with a factory pilot instructor on board and a flight director and an ifr flight plan. Much easier. And you still get to be famous

 

Seriously.... How many round the world flight do we need to do every month. Glad he's been rescued...... But seriously... An R22? That right there says your idea was flawed.

Interesting ferry tanks on the left seat to make such a long over water leg from Baffin Island to Greenland. Glad he was found alive. I didn't find any info on what forced him down, mechanical or weather. My guess is weather with the reported fog. I've been out over the ice flows and open water in the arctic when the fog rolls in. It can be very difficult to maintain visual reference.

Interesting. This was pulled from a news article. Did they mean Jet A? 100LL? Something else?

 

"On June 25, Nav Canada issued a notice to aviators that no aviation fuel was available at the Iqaluit airport until approximately the end of July. Ananov refuelled his helicopter on Friday, but it isn't clear with what."

agreed. Might as well paddle around the Arctic in your mother's mixing bowl. I think some of these adventures have merit but not the ones that are just doing a repeat of the same thing but purposely making it harder. Maybe that's totally subjective but...

So based on all the posts going around FB asking for donations to get him home, Im assuming he has no support network in place before he departed? No reserves set up for oh......getting you home if you crash in the ice? The government of his country isnt interested in at least popping for a ride to his particular consulate in Canada? Is this guy seriously broke and stranded in Canada? its 2015 people... nobody in his home country can wire him some cash and a plane ticket home?

I heard (somewhere) that it was a drive belt failure that forced him down. He was able to get out and into his raft. The ship has gone down to Davy Jones' Locker. Why he did not have his ID and stuff on him is beyond me. Seems kinda dumb.

Actually it was an Aussie, Dick Smith did it solo in a B206. He subsequently went around the world again in an S76, but via the north and south poles. Steve Fossett (if it was him) cheated a bit by not going into the southern hemisphere so it doesn't really count as going around the world. A bit like standing on the north pole and turning through 360 degrees.

When you go to the National Air and Space Museum, you will see a plaque, listing the "first" flights:

1924- first flight around the world, Lts Lowell Smith and Leslie Arnold

1933- first solo flight around the world - Wiley Post

1947 - first light plane around the world - Clifford Evans and George Truman

1949 - first non-stop around the world - Capt James Gallacher

1957 - first jet flight around the world - led by Maj Gen Old

1964 - first woman around the world - Jerrie Mock

1982 - first helicopter flight around the world - Ross Perot Jr and J Coburn

1983 - first solo helicopter around the world - Dick Smith

 

Dick would have beaten Ross, leaving Ft Worth in Aug 82, but broke his flight into 2 sections to catch summer in both hemispheres. Ross stayed in the northern hemisphere, so didn't really count as a real round-the-world, but despite leaving after Dick, he beat him home, with Dick finishing back at Ft Worth on 22 July 83, the anniversary of Wiley Post's landing.

Dick's 206, DIK, is in a museum in Sydney.
