Lookin' for a good reason...

Recommended Posts

This is a long one, if you like you can skip to the bold for the good stuff haha.

So as some of you know, I'm a 2LT, former infantry-type, who assessed AD AV and start BOLC in Jan. My wife and I moved here to Enterprise early so she could get a head start on her career and get a few more months of work under her belt before we had to leave again after flight school.

No one wants to hire someone for 3-4 months, even part time, and I'm bored out of my mind. We don't need money, my wife makes plenty for both of us, but I'm dying to start training already. Does anyone have an idea of how to convince HRC to grant my request to start early?

I've notified them that I'm here and ready to go but they told me to hold my damn horses and wait for my start date, as I figured they would. I know a guy who filed a 4187 through his University requesting an earlier start date, he said he had a good reason for it but haven't heard from him in a while and I don't know what reason he cited.

So, I'm asking for a brainstorming session here haha. Any, I mean ANY ideas as to good reasons to start early can be posted. Doesn't matter how ridiculous because someone else may read that and be inspired with a good idea.

I want to assure everyone that no matter how good the reason's here I won't lie to get in early. What I'm looking for here is a viable reason to start early, and maybe a little entertainment by yalls other wild ideas haha.

Ever seen Tommy Boy? You could tape a bunch of road flares to your chest and go to the HQ BLDG and demand to be let in early.

Seriously, I would go to the unit and try to talk to the Commander. If they have an opening maybe he/she can contact HRC and amend your orders to start early. Otherwise I'd focus on PT and studying and stockpile as much sleep as you can.

Tell them you are a 2lt former infantry and can f*ck their world sideways unless they give into your simple demand. Otherwise I suggest taking some college classes, try to attend some military school, or enjoy the time with your family.

I would pay money to watch a 2LT do this.

No offense, walkerman ;)

Great movie.... Anyways this is actually the second time I've been advised to go in and talk to the commander. My experience has always been to avoid bugging the commander... at all costs.... NO MATTER WHAT.... haha. Really though, you wouldn't be annoyed with some ridiculous 2LT coming into your office and asking you this question?

I'm thinking I combine these two ideas, they seem like winners. I Walk straight in there, whip out my Schwortz, throw it on the counter and start making demands, when they see how small it really is and start laughing at me, I rip open my top and show them the flares and continue making demands until I'm arrested.... yup.... doin it

"Tact" is the first part of the word "tactics". Pick your time carefully, be rational and succinct. If what you're asking is good for you and the service, even if the answer is no...

I'm probbaly at 90% correctness on the following:

FSXXI is a slot that covers all of the flight schools. You were given a primary date for next FY and they back date the other schools from there. They are all easier and cheaper.

I could see you starting early, but maybe just having a bubble later. Trying to see who would make that happen the easiest?

Ask the commander. All he/she can do is say no. Don't make it about you being bored. "I was able to secure an early report date, but my start date did not get moved. I am a avaliable at a moments notice for a short fall/no-show seat or in any other way i can serve the command."

Or something.

Just go ask. Politely but with a backbone.

Nothing wrong with asking, I got a start date for WOCS 4 months earlier than my original date because I let HRC know that I was available in case anyone cancelled. That said, get used to waiting. I waited 10 weeks for BOLC, 4 months for Common Core, and will likely wait another 4 before I start my advance. Studying and PT fill up my days, and honestly, it isn't a bad life. I'd rather be actively engaged in training so as to get back to Big Army, but I'll appreciate this time now because sooner or later, my family time will be quite limited I'm sure.

Speaking as someone who commanded three times, no I wouldn't be annoyed by an officer who had the initiative to try to do the right thing for the army (and himself).

Just be respectful and realistic, maybe run your idea past the 1SG or some of the cadre who're familiar with the way things are done first to get their opinion.
