CFI renewal...amazing!

I typically do my CFI renewal online and have to comply with the FAA mandated stuff every two years to stay current. Really the only reason(s) I want to keep it going is:

(1) If it does lapse, getting it all back is a ROYAL PITA and expensive.

(2) If I happen to (god forbid!) run into some kind of a financial crunch and have to take a job, it seems to help to have as many certificates as possible, even if only working as a platform instructor or sim guy.

The thing that amazes me is that by renewing just one of the CFI certs I hold or by spending some time online and passing their many quizzes, ALL OF THEM get renewed, no matter how much or how little they are all related. I currently hold:

Glider CFI

Rotary Wing (helicopter) CFI

Airplane singe and Multi Engine Land CFI

Instrument Airplane CFI

And they ALL get renewed all at one time and at one single stroke of a pen...seems weird to me, but I am pretty glad it works that way!!

No. It would not.

Exactly correct. The ATP only allows you to instruct in defined scenarios in certain jobs while operating under SPECIFIC parts of the FAA Regs, not just instruction in general.

The ATP allows one to train other pilots in air transport service (airlines and 135 operations that require the ATP, and only then when the trainee and trainer have been through the company PIC training and the flying is for that operator, while performing service under that company's operating certificate.

The ATP is not an instructor certificate.

American Flyers was good, but my only experience.

Be warned that it's Fixed Wing heavy, unfortunately. You get to learn a bunch about stalls and spins if you don't already know it.

I'm coming up, myself, actually. I might try to get my AGI instead; that will have the same effect, right?

Speaking of CFI renewals... I'm coming up on mine. What's everyone's experience thus far with the various entities that offer eFIRCs??

I have used American Flyers many times. And yes it is airplane oriented. This last time, I did the AOPA course. It has helicopter and seaplane segments. Plus segments on student retention, etc. Since I am an airplane and helicopter CFI and I fly seaplanes, I found this course interesting and enjoyable. Plus, they allow you to go beyond the required minimum if you desire and do additional courses that interest you.

Or you can go the way I did the time before and have an FAA Inspector as a student and get your licks in while you can.

No. The GI is a totally different program. However, your CFI will keep your GI current.

Avbug, I believe that only the trainer has to have completed the company PIC training. What would the purpose be of this authorization if both pilots were required to have completed the company's PIC training? How would new PIC's and SIC's get trained?

I’ve attended the HAI FIRC for the last 14 years. Good for a helicopter specific FIRC. Prior to that, I did a Jeppeson FIRC online but it had lots of fixed wing stuff and took hours to complete. Next year, I plan on using the Kings helicopter FIRC. At $125 it’s reasonably priced and supposedly pretty painless….

I was asked to take a review the King's helo CFI eFIRC and did so in May of 2014. It is a good helo SBT oriented course for renewal.

This year, AFS-800 and AOPA asked me to view and critic the AOPA eFIRC helicopter edition.

I got errors corrected and linked it to USHST initiatives.

It is now a valid renewal course.

I've been using American Flyers FIRC prepaid for at least three renewals now and have no gripes at all. Do the course online, print the completion certificate, take that and your old CFI certificate (card) to the FSDO and SHAZAAM....new certificates...no hassle, no expense and the only thing is that you gotta wait for the FAA to S-L-O-W-L-Y process the stuff and send you your new card.

Mike,

Between the AOPA and the King eFIRC's, which would you recommend?

I would recommend the King's course because it brings much of the info and awareness that the USHST is addressing.

Also, I did not review the entire AOPA eFIRC, just looked over the helo section and got it on track.
