Commissioned Army Officer to Aviation Warrant Officer

Recommended Posts

My DA form 61 was pushed back due to my ROTC initial contract being up in oct2016 for the Jul2016 board and is well within the '12 month ETS'. Anyone have this issue? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I was in the may board and was also in the 12 month ETS window. Was not an issue for me, not sure why it would be an issue since you're applying for active duty with da form 160-R.

Gents,

Got an email yesterday stating, "based on your BASD you have more than 48 months of AFS as a Commissioned Officer which makes you ineligible for flight training per AR 611-110, para 2-1b"

Any suggestions?

Read through it and I assume that this reg is for Officers becoming Aviator Officers?

Because I'm pretty sure Captains and Majors who resign their Commission have over 48 months of AFS.

Thanks,

Interesting... I have a buddy that was a captain before reverting. I'll talk to him and see if he had any extra hoops to jump through.

And so it begins. I'm at Rucker now. Finishing inprocessing with installation and BN today - I'll start B Co on Monday.

I'll be working CDO Monday. So I will see you there. B Co will be so glad to have you... As they stick you on some details while you hold!!!

Hey it's better than being at Riley. My wife and I miss Rucker which we didn't expect to

I didn't think Riley was that bad, minus being up on the hill with ole Dagger Brigade.

Also, anyone else live on post or did everyone else opt to live off post and I'm the only dude who chose to live here? Lol.

*bump*

Good evening ladies and gents. Just some info on my experience thus far, I know some of you have a lot of RFIs and I hope this clears up some of them.

1) After you are selected, get that UQR submitted ASAP. It takes a while for HRC to process them (ask your buddies who are REFRADing unless you know a ton of lucky people). Mine took about 4 months, most take 4-6 months.

2) Don't let your current duty station's finance office tell you that you must sell your leave. Otherwise, you will end up selling it, and have to buy it back on the tail end.

2B) Your leave doesn't automatically transfer! You will have to do a 4187 (I know, it's weird) through B Co, 1-145th thru BN thru finance to get your original leave balance transferred once your arrive at Ft. Rucker. I left the Army as a CPT with 50.5 days and now I have 7 (I submitted it last week so I'll let you know how it goes from there...).

3) Save AT LEAST 2-3 months worth of pay prior to transitioning. BLUF - expect to not get paid for at least 2.5 months (that's best case scenario). Most guys here who went CO to WO took about 3-4 months to get paid again, worst case I've heard is 6 months (he actually had to get an AER loan to survive). OR if you're a baller and have awesome credit and can risk it on your credit card, whatever, props to you.

3B) Make sure you do a 1506 during inprocessing. I was one of the rare cases where that got over looked. It's a record of service and this insures (ensures?) that you do not have a gap in service, and it also helps DFAS when they put you back in the system to ensure you are getting the correct/proper pay (i.e. - WO1 w/ 4 years of service).

4) You will REFRAD on X date, be re-appointed to WO1 the following date, and whenever HRC gives you promotion orders, the DOR to CW2 will be the date after you're appointed a WO1. Ex) I REFRAD'd on 07JUL, was appointed WO1 08JUL, and my orders actually showed up on my OMPF 15JUL with a DOR to CW2 09JUL. That's rare (from what I gather). Most guys didn't get those promotion orders until 2-3 months after. It's HRC - it takes time. Be patient.

5) You do NOT attend WOCS.

6) You will get a WOBC date. Yes, you are a WOBC by-pass, HOWEVER, you still must take an APFT on day 0 with your WOBC class, as well as attend the initial briefs, plus half a day of briefs on WOBC day 1.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I will gladly try to help. Or any of the other guys who are still lurking around. Thanks.

Good stuff. The whole leave thing is a pain. Pretty sure mine is still messed up... and it's been a year.

Nick was saying his took a few months but he literally kept going back and forth to get it fixed. He also had like, 77 days to transfer over...

Hello all!

I apologize if most of these questions have already been answered; I've tried reading through a few of these pages to gather info before posting. I'm an OD guy, currently the BMO for my BN (I know one of the guys who posts on here was also formerly an OD guy). I've yet to take the SIFT (still studying) and obtain a flight physical so I technically haven't started the process yet.

However, is there any advice at all that anyone has? Anything they wish they did differently with the test? Any particular areas I need to focus on besides what the test reference books suggest?

Additionally, after I complete those two, what tasks must I complete right away? I've read through that some guys had issues with being released from branch, is that common?

Do I need to give a courtesy heads up to my BN CDR?

How about obtaining your letter of rec from a senior warrant? Is it purely networking or is it common to ask someone that you've never met for this type of recommendation? I only know senior techs but no senior warrant pilots, unfortunately. I appreciate the feedback!

There are a couple of posts here concerning the SIFT that you can sift (see what I did there?) through. I'd recommend the study guide on Amazon - that's what I used and I scored pretty decent (read: not great but not bad) on the SIFT.

Varies branch to branch man. You drive your career. Contact Mr. Cooper and explain what you are doing and also provide him with the template (he's done them before so he should know), but do that anyways. Be polite, courteous, and professional about it. No one wants to support a d-bag.

Absolutely considering he is one of three letters of recommendations you have to get once you start putting your packet together. He/She is not going to want to get blind sided by one of his officers asking for a LOR for a Warrant Officer packet out of the blue. It's just common officer courtesy.

My personal experience was I befriended some dudes down at the local CAB (1st CAB, 1st ID) and a bunch of them recommended I go ask the CWOB. I wouldn't recommend this until you have about 80% of your packet done (the last tid bits should be like a branch letter of release, etc.). Keep in mind, you're asking a CW5 who doesn't even know you, to sit down with you and talk to you for MAYBE 15-20 minutes to see if he is willing to put his name on a LOR for you. Again, just because you outrank him/her, doesn't mean you can pull a fast one on them. Again, be polite, professional, and courteous.

Hey all I'm new to this forum but I was reading through this entire post and wondered if anyone might have an answer. Im a commissioned guy O-2 that finished flight school Rated in the A/L and M model UH-60 but my reserve unit shut down and they put me in the IRR. Could I switch to Warrant and go active duty by submitting a warrant packet? Anything input would be more helpful from what I've got from branch thanks!

Well, I know aviators go from AD commissioned to AD warrant. When they get accepted by the board, rather then showing up to rucker, they get PCS orders to a new duty station as a W2. But, to be honest, I'm not sure if the process is the same coming from a reserve unit over to Active duty...

Thanks anyways. Unfortunately thats pretty much the same answer I've gotten from everyone that I've talked with.

Team,

Another fellow officer pointed this out to me who was seeking information. Read below. Reference also attached.

"Non-Aviation Army Commissioned Officers: The board procedures for (non-aviation branch) Army commissioned officers have changed effective 7 DEC 1016. All (non-aviation branch) Army officers that desire to be boarded for 153A (rotor wing aviator) will be boarded in March 2017. Subsequent boards will be held once per FY in January. Applicants must meet the requirements IAW AR 611-110 and complete all documents required IAW the Warrant Officer Application Checklist. Requested waivers will be included with the application packet at the time of submission. All qualified non-select applicants can resubmit an updated application packet for the next FY board."
