Tablet advice.

Recommended Posts

the minis are probably the best if you will use it like a kneeboard. would recommend at least a 32 gb ipad since foreflight and other apps take up a decent amount of space. gyronimo also makes nice apps for weight and balance, fuel burn, and may also have a poh. it can also be nice having digital versions of publications on it to find things quickly. cell can be nice but is not necessary. if you have cell data fore

fight can update weather and airport data enroute.

iPad mini is absolutely perfect. If/when you get it, get FoxIt PDF to view all your pubs. It will allow you to highlight text, make notes, etc. You can also organize all your pubs into folders, which is extremely helpful.

Depends on whether or not you want to have cell/data when you're away from your wifi on the ground. Our AWR prohibits the use of GPS, Wi-Fi, 3/4G in flight anyways, so it's not really going to make much of a difference in the cockpit. Unless the rules are different for other airframes, which I'm not sure about (but doubt it). I also recommend GoodReader for iPad, you can sync it with google drive, save annotated PDF's, view powerpoints, and do all kinds of other junk.

iPad mini, 64gb, flying circle bags makes a really nice case, no cell service(wifi only version), and good reader. I haven't had a problem with it or regretted it yet.

That AWR is army wide I think.

Fits perfectly inside my pubs bag I got from gung ho gear (ultra attack size)

I still use my original full size iPad from like 3 or 4 years ago. It works awesome. Next one I buy might be a iPad mini though. I would definitely recommend 64GB if you can swing it. You gotta think about the future. You can definitely put all the pubs on it with all the other memory sizes, but what about movies and games. Sucks when you're going TDY and staying in some crappy barracks with nothing to do, or in the field. With the 64GB you can have all the movies and games to keep you entertained. Same thing for if you deploy. Gotta have them movies for the flight over. I always hated trying to decide what 4 movies were my favorite. My next iPad is definitely going to be a larger memory.

iPad mini is a good option. iPad is the only tablet covered by the AWR for the 60. I had an ASUS tablet for awhile just for pubs and it was fine. But if you want Foreflight or anything similar (I use FltPlanGo...it's free), get an iPad. Definitely at least 32 GB and with cell service. Like magnus said, it's so you have GPS capability. If you get the wifi only version, you have to have an external GPS to get a GPS signal. For PDF readers, FoxIt is a great free reader. If you want something a little better get PDF expert. It has amazing funtionality and it is constantly rated as one of the best PDF apps for the iPad. Costs $5 or $10 bucks.

Seems like the iPad Mini in 32 GB or higher is the general consensus. I have a while before this even becomes of concern to me, but what's the recommendation in a iPad Mini 1/2/3/4? I would imagine it boils down to personal preference.

I imagine tablets are becoming pretty prevalent in the aviation world? From the ground side, my mechanics used the sh*t out of their tablets for various reasons - one obviously for ease of access to a plethora of TMs for the various pieces of equipment they maintained.

I would go with a iPad mini 2 or 4. Just depends on your budget. There was no improvement in the iPad mini 3 as compared to the iPad mini 2 except they added TouchID. Hardware, processor, and everything else was exactly the same. If you can find a 3 for cheaper than a 2, get that, but that's not usually the case. The 4 does offer some improvement. It's lighter, slightly smaller, and has an upgraded processor, RAM (2 GB instead of 1 GB), and front facing camera. It also has a slightly different display in terms of the way it was made. It's supposed to have blacker blacks and reduce glare. The only other real notable difference is that you can now do split screen (run two apps at the same time, side by side).

Performance of the 2/3 is great, but the 4 is slightly better. For me, none of those differences are enough to make me jump on a 4, so I'd rather save the cash and go for the 2. However, if you wait till October, there will probably be a new model.

Here's a thing I have only ever used Apple Devices.

At one stage the IPad was the only device certified for use in the cockpit.

If you are going to use it for Jepp Plates in the cockpit don't get the mini .

Never smaller than the 64 Gig

I don't use one with a data card as I have a iPhone and connect via the hot spot. Also when you start flying higher and faster the built in GPS does not sample fast enough. So you have to get a GPS receiver.

Works extremely well. Not expensive

Using only Apple devices makes compatibility easy and they all talk to each other easily.

PDFMaps by Avenza is good. Not sure if you can get a georeferenced map of the Rucker training area. I seem to remember that there was a copy of it available for download on AKO on the "Before Flight" page. We have a georeferenced map of our AO and it's great. It'll show you where you're at on the map, as well as link to Google Maps so you can get satellite view of wherever you see on the map. It would have been great to have during BWS.

  • 1 month later...

I have two questions here.

First, I have an LG "G Pad" (VK810) that we got for free from Verizon. I'm wondering, does anyone have any major reason, other than preference, as to why an iPad is more preferable? This one I have has 16GB and 4G LTE service. I really don't want to buy an iPad if this thing will work for me.

Second question, I fly 47s and carry a mini -10. It's getting kinda beat up though so I decided to run over to the hangar and pick up the 2" hard binder for it, and the -10 doesn't even fit, it's too big. I've looked all over the internet for a 2.25" that would fit the 5.5x8.5 paper and haven't found one. Does anyone use anything that works well for their mini -10 that could spread some experience my way?

If you read the AWR, it specifically named the IPad as being approved for use I think, if I remember correctly. And only in airplane mode without data transmission.

You might get ahold of your AWR regarding tablet use and check it out.

Not sure about the 47 but the AWR for the 60 specifically mentions the iPad as being the only approved device for use during flight. If you're just using it for epubs, use whatever you want. But if you want to use it in flight, make sure your AWR covers it.
