Additional Courses

What additional courses can you try to knock out during your bubbles at Rucker? I know this is a ways off for me (since I don't report for AV WOBC until JUL) but just for FYI in case I get stuck in a long bubble. I saw Lindsey mention she knocked out the ALSE course while she was there and another member mention the hypobaric chamber.

I was on a bubble for almost 4 months waiting for primary. I asked to do ALSE but they told me no, said if I failed primary what would I do with an ALSE cert.... other than that though, I don't know of anything.

 

I do know they have some people knock out ALSE while waiting for advanced, or after advanced prior to WOBC (2) and or PCS.

That's funny because I know Stocktrader did ALSE before WOBC part 1, even.

Altitude chamber was fun. And easy to schedule after you complete aeromed. I did that one.

I did it a few years ago, my HAPS card is good for another 2 years, is there any benifit to doing it again?

For the active guys the only two classes are ALSE and High Altitude trainer. Other than that, you'll get shut down.

You could do ALSE if they let you....it's a 5 week course. I think they only started letting people do it during bubbles because they weren't filling slots for awhile. Right now, they say that they don't have an open class until later this year. Maybe they fill flight school students into the slots of people that don't show up.

 

The nice thing about doing ALSE is that if you get ALSE as an additional duty you'll at least have some actual training. Most of the other additional duties don't have an actual course you go to, you just learn from the continuity book (if there is one) and reading TMs and ARs.

HOWEVER....it can also be a huge pain in the butt. I went to ALSE a couple months after reporting to my first unit, and now I'm the ALSO (and the NVG custodian, MRT trainer, IMO, EO officer, and a few other minor duties). However I don't have an ALSE NCO, or any other technicians and it literally takes up all of my time when I'm not flying. If it's done correctly, it's a full time job....it should be an MOS. Not to mention, you don't actually learn a lot of the day to day tasks that are required of an ALSE technician. And, you'll probably forget most of what you learned in ALSE school before you get to your unit and become an ALSE tech/officer.

Yeah I'm going TDY to the ALSE Course in April, also in addition to my other 5 additional duties that I got thrown under the bus for. My last unit actually had a full time job where that was the guys actual job was to perform all the inspections and everything, like it should be.

NG Facilities SHOULD have a full time technician who does that.

 

If you're the ALSO for your company, and don't have any techs, get on your commander to send someone. Have an extra mechanic, or someone who wants to do stuff for their NCOER/Show their motivation to get LORs? Try to send them.
