July 2016 Selection Board

Recommended Posts

I'm really hoping to! Got my second consult tomorrow, I figure 3 consults should be good before I decide on a place. I have nothing to lose at this point other than time and money, and those are both useless anyway, right? lol

After having skin reduction surgery, PRK twice, I've come to the realization that the application process is giving me good practice on the hurry up and wait skills. But the PRK is worth it man. I flew with glasses for years and after getting 20/20 it silly I didn't get it sooner and just save the money I spend on all those glasses!

Hey Guys,

So I'm new to the forum but have a couple questions...

My packet is currently submitted to the July civilian board, but I'm a little nervous about the selection since the May board was canceled. I'm a prior Marine UAV operator/ current civilian contractor flying and mission commanding UAV's in theater, going on my 8th trip to Afghan. I don't have any actual manned pilot time other than just ground school laser grade, but over 3000 hrs of UAV aviation time. I didn't do great on the SIFT only scoring a 57 which was pretty disappointing. But I'm hoping my LOR's including a current 82nd deputy CG as well as a retired Marine O5 Aviator as well as an O4 and O3 Marine Aviator hold some weight. My PT was a 282 which Im working on getting to a 300. I have about 4 semesters worth of school but no degrees. Does anyone know what the selection rate for civilian boards usually is? Also I left active duty in December of 2012 and my IRR time expired in March, I've looked around and haven't been able to find any concrete answers as to whether or not I'd have to attend Army BCT. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Marines do not have to go through Army's bootcamp, unless you want to. Prior staff sgt marine in my ocs class went through army bootcamp and he said it was dumb and regretted every sec of it. He was treated as an nco, but being around that enviornment was not worth it. As a marine i went straight to ocs. They tried to make me go, bc i had 3-4 yrs break in service. I fought it and went straight to OCS.

I appreciate that man, I was talking with the Battalion Warrant recruiter after my board and he had told me I'd have to go. He mentioned something recently changing with the process, but its good to know I can fight it. I guess it's just something to talk with the MEPS people about if/when the time comes. Either way if I get selected, I'll do what I have to do. It's just something I'd prefer not to do if it's not absolutely required.

If you look up AR 601-210, since you've had over a 3 year break in service you are required to go through BCT or WTC regardless of component. It's under section 5-16 in the AR. I'll see if there is any new USAREC messages pertaining to your situation but don't believe there is.

Thank you I'll take a look at the reg. I guess my question is does the break in service start when my active duty time was complete or when my IRR was complete?

Looking at 6-15 1(d) and 1(F) it says "break in service is defined as as last period of service to include IRR" is that how you would interpret it?

.Does anyone know what the selection rate for civilian boards usually is?.

Recently civilian selection rates have been near 100%. This was because HRC (Aviation Proponent) dictated selection boards consist of 50/50 civilian and in-service applicants. There simply weren't as many civilian applicants as in-service, so the selection rates were disproportionate.

The ratio has returned to somewhere around 75/25 +\- favoring in-service applicants. You can expect civilian selection rates to become more competitive than they have been the last year and return to historic norms.

Are you able to make the July USAREC board with your battalion board being so late?

I hope so. My battalion board has been scheduled since early May so I don't know what played into it being scheduled so late but I'm a little nervous about it as well. Lucky for me, my recruiter is on three weeks leave.

I hope it works out for you. I was also extremely nervous for my battalion board. There's nothing I can say that will calm your nerves. Just go in there and be confident and answer their questions. The Officers that interviewed me made it clear from the start that they wanted me to be relaxed.

If you follow the tips outlined in the battalion board section of this forum you will be good to go.

Good luck

Ok, I'm a civilian applicant and need some help. There is a disconnect between the information my recruiter is giving me and everything I thought I knew about how the application process works. Some clarification from somebody in the know would be very appreciated.

My packet is basically done. I have taken every test and submitted all the paperwork to my recruiter. As I understand it, there are just a couple things he has to put into the computer to upload.

I went into their office last Thursday and out of the blue told me that Monday, June 20th was the deadline for my revised packet submission. Luckily the commander was walking in and I got to sit down with him for a quick "interview" (which I didn't even know was required). Then I went home and finished up my hand-written copy of my essay and went back to the office and re-take the apft at 2pm in +90 degree heat (scored a 284).

Then on Monday I drive over to submit my last LOR and ask if everything got done on their end. I was told my recruiter was on leave for the week, but not to worry because the actual deadline for submission is July 11th. Ok.

My last question for them was when is my BN board interview? As I understand it I need to go before 3 officers from the BN and they submit a thumbs up or down as the final piece of my packet before the USAREC board. I just got off the phone with my stand-in and he told me that my packet is sent in on July 11th and they review it for submission then I physically go in for the interview on July 20th and the USAREC board happens in secret on a cloud somewhere but no more than a month from the interview for the final yes or no...........?????????

I told him that since forever I thought that the USAREC board was July 18-22 (as stated on their website) and that my BN board interview had to be at least ten days prior. He told me not to pay attention to the dates on the internet because they have the up-to-date info in front of them.

I have already gotten bumped from the May board from the cancellation and I don't want to get bumped to September because they don't want to close the deal. Do I have reason for serious concern? Or is everything fine and I've just been seriously confused?

Please....

You are required to have the Battalion Board interview prior to your packet being submitted to USAREC. If they "submitted" your packet, it would most likely mean that it is submitted to the recruiting battalion to be vetted prior to the battalion interview.

If you are scheduled for an interview on July 20th, then your packet will not be viewed at USAREC until September.

Thank you for clarifying what I previously thought. Are interviews scheduled by the recruiters or are there set dates that each battalion puts in place?

Anything I could even do at this point? I really don't appreciate the way they are trying to tell me everything is fine and I'm just ignorant of the process instead of just telling me "we can't get you on the July board".

Thoughts or recommendations?

Each recruiting battalion sets their interviews. From what I've read on here and experienced personally, each recruiting battalion seems to do things differently.

Exactly, sometimes you just have to have patience. I was ready long before the March board but missed it on a technicality, then had my interview and everything ready to go when they cancelled the last board. So it's painful but the waiting game is all too familiar for most.

Actually, so this might seem like a dumb question, but after you are submitted to USAREC, do they call all your character references and work? I just ask cause while I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting I realized some of my packet info might be a bit old. I don't want any dead or changed numbers/addresses. So I'm trying to make sure they are all still current. The problem with high "profile" character references is some of them are VERY difficult to get a hold of.

I could be wrong on this one, but the SF-86 information might get used in conducting your actual background check, but usually that is for TS only. If you ever have to do a TS you'll probably need to update all of that information anyway. When you do a security interview later at the recruiting station, just let them know if work history, changes in contact info for references, etc and they will update your -86. At least this has been my experience.

As for the LORs, I have never heard of the references being contacted EXCEPT if they cannot contact you for some reason. They will call your references and ask what is up. With all of the confusion that occurs in recruiting offices, it makes you wonder, but for the most part they are genuinely concerned and want to help you get in the Army.

That being said, I think that if someone wrote an LOR a long time ago, it might not hurt to get new email or phone numbers.

Absolutely. I had one of my recommenders resign and date because the letter was almost a year old. Too easy not to do.

Perfect, thanks for the info. I actually had to redo my security interview last month because mine was going to expire before July and it went just fine. I'm just a touch jumpy because I'm probably getting a new job offer early July when everything is supposed to be set and don't want any inconsistencies in my packet.
