Hello ladies and gents, I've been perusing the forums on here and this has to be my favorite site who seems to have the most info and helpful people.(sorry for the length)

My name is Randy, I have done a ton of research into this program for a couple months now. I am currently a civilian EXTREAMLY interested in the WOFT. Yesterday I took the time to actually go see a recruiter, although everything I saw online said they wouldn't be much help because they will be pushing me to go enlisted and transfer over. Yes my recruiter did in fact try this with me but I do have a feeling he will be willing to help me in my journey regardless what I decide. He is already helping me get my packet together(he doesn't know much about WOFT at all) and we have come to the decision that provided I score well on my testing(and I will!) we will be sending a packet in.

What I would have some questions and appreciate ANY and all advice for, would be some of the following. What is the best way to go about getting selected? What is the likeliness? I am currently 23, no flight training and no collage. Im currently trying hard to get my LORs. I did JROTC for 4 years and have a retired Lt. Colonel Pilot who flew Phantoms writing me a great one. Im sure I will also get one from a Retired Chief Master Sgt who was a First Sgt... How much will this help me if I study my but off and score high on my Sift and Asvab? I cut 40 Ibs to get in and although im over weight requirements, my tape(BMI) is well under max (26%) and is 20%. Also I have some stupid tickets im not worried about. But I'm worried about is I have probation on my record. do I get a waiver? how do I go about this? Is there a way to network and get more LORs? Also after packet is sent through, how long until we know if I was accepted or not? Again any help or info would be amazing.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

So you've given us the following information about you:
-20% body fat

-JROTC in high school

-multiple speeding tickets

-prior probation for some reason

-two mediocre LOR's not from an aviation warrant officer (or anyone who's been in the military recently)

It's not looking good Randy. Perhaps some more information like oh, your APFT, SIFT, ASVAB, high school gpa, etc could give us a little more insight to your situation. As it stands... well there's room for improvement.

Tip 1. This forum is full of grammar nazis. In fact, the military in general is full of them as well. Use semi-correct spelling and punctuation when possible anywhere on here. Take that for what it's worth. Spell check is just a squiggly red line away.

Tip 2. This forum has multiple threads about the current selection rates and the types of credentials and statistics of people currently being picked up by the Army on active duty street to seat boards. Spend a few more hours scouring them to get an idea of what you're up against.

Tip 3. From what little you've told us about yourself, your qualifications are lacking. The board members will be asking "Why have you not at least started a college degree?" or "Why do you have x number of speeding tickets?". Are you going to have good answers for them? What sets you apart from the rest of the applicants? Most street to seat guys these days have an associates or bachelors degree (especially if they're 23 or older) or prior military experience, few or no waivers, 260+ pft score, and some good life experiences. Why are you more deserving than they are?

All of that aside, the Army is downsizing. The number of flight slots they're giving out every year was cut by some ridiculous number like 30%. Hell the rental market here in Enterprise has taken a beating because of the reduction of students flowing through. The Army is getting more selective, which means you have to up your game. So what can you do right now to improve your shots at getting picked up? Start college, like now. Even if it's just an associates degree in basket weaving at a community college. Get your APFT close to 300, because Army likes that. Study for the ASVAB and the SIFT and get knock out scores. Take the time to find some aviation warrant officers and tell them you're a prospective flight student and would like to set up a meeting to talk about the process (or even a phone call). Lots of work to do bud. Get on it.

It is Shindig, reincarnated......

Wasn't Shindig selected? If that twerp can do it...

WOFThopefull/Randy:

Beauty and intelligence is on the street corner, never gonna make it. You have to work harder and smarter than everybody else. "Everybody else" because this is a competition, if you're seeing anybody's back at the finish line, you're not THE 'lucky' winner who will be wearing the wings. If success is a 1 in 10 chance overall, aiming for number 2 is a losing proposition.

Start with magnus017's critique and suggestions. The bad news is that you are where you are, 23, no degree or other exceptional! outstanding! qualifications! (I think you would have mentioned them)... so you have years of work ahead. But that is also potentially good news- the military is currently drawing down. That's a "buy" signal if you aim long term and really, really want to beat the odds...

You could do this thing, I haven't seen a big red S on an Army Aviator's chest in a while...

Dont give up. Don't let doubt get in your way. Everyone from your mom, to your friends, to your recruiter will tell you that you are dreaming to think the army will let you fly helicopters. Prepare for setbacks. First time I attempted the pt it was about 98 degrees outside and I couldnt finish the 2 miles. The next day and every day for the following weeks I ran at noon to adjust my body to the Texas heat. Eventually got my time down to 13:45.
