Hello all,

I am slated to head out to Ft. Rucker and will be there for flight school/training. I wanted to get an opinion of the cities nearby and any heads-up or preference when it comes to moving a family out there. I've done a little research and it looks like Enterprise and Ozark are good options, but I'm looking for some insight from someone who's been there / currently there. I appreciate anything you can tell me about the area when it comes to families and adjusting to AL. Thanks in advance.

I live in Bowden Terrace on post. It is really nice. The service has been great, there is an awesome pool and really nice club house. It is also about five minutes from the commissary and PX. I can leave ten minutes before I have to be anywhere and get there on time. The on base gyms are also pretty decent. I personally think on post is the way to go.

Enterprise has most everything you need but if you want to do some more entertaining things for kids, Dothan is about thirty minutes away.

Overall, this is one of my favorite duty stations.

The general consensus from everyone I know is that if you have kids, post is the way to go. If you don't, then pick your poison, but most people I know that are single/childless choose off-post.

I grew up in Ozark, not much there but a few restaurants and a Wal Mart. Enterprise is the same just a little bigger. Dothan has everything worth going to. If your a student I would just stay on base, especially with a family. My folks are in Ozark and my wife's family is right outside of Dothan in Kinsey even though my wife and I could pocket our BAH there and probably stay with either of our families we will most likely stay on base just because we don't want the hassle of a commute from anywhere.

I love being from here. I know we will all be busy but find some time to enjoy the area. Hit up some of the Florida beaches. Like to fish? Take a trip to Lake Eufala or Tholoco (it's right on base) Canoeing, tubing and kayaking try Bear Paw Creek. Like to golf? Try the highlands in Dothan. my dad and I had a membership on Fort Rucker when I was in highschool. It's not a bad course. Bottom line is I love it around there. As with anything in the military, it will be what you make it! Good luck finding a place man.

Enterprise has the most to offer of the towns immediately around Fort Rucker. I wouldn't recommend living in Dothan simply because of the drive. It doesn't seem like much but the extra fifteen to twenty minutes adds up during the busy phases of training.
