cptamerica2
Has anyone been stationed in Hawaii? Where's the best place to live? Any tips or pointers would be great! Thanks in advance!
PhrogGuy
It really depends on what you are looking for. Rent out here is in the steep side. I live in base housing, but with 5 kids I couldn't really get a large enough house for the BAH on the local economy. I would start in Mililani or Wahiawa and North Shore (Haleiwa). Waianae is a bust because of traffic.
PhrogGuy
Do you know which unit you are headed to?
cptamerica2
Don't know a unit yet. From my "research", I'd guess 2-25 since I'm a Blackhawk guy.

Tradewinds
Waialua is a nice place, next to Haleiwa, commute is not bad to Wheeler, very low key and laid back. Only downside is that it is farther from Honolulu if a larger city is important to you. The beaches on the North Shore are great in the summer, get's pretty rough in the winter months. Ewa Beach isn't bad but can be hit and miss depending on the neighborhood. Kaneohe is beautiful but the commute on the H-3 can be brutal. Of course Mililani and Wahiawa have the best location in regard to the base but they do have that standard suburb feel. If you really want to feel like your waking up in Hawaii every morning, closer to the North Shore will fit the bill nicely. A lot will depend on what size family you have and kids ages.
dirtyfoot
All of the above is right on. I lived in Ewa and then into post housing to have more family time, although I would have lived in a North Shore shanty had the wife allowed it. Don't listen to anyone who says Hawaii is a bust, the kind of folks who warn you about the evil West Side (Waianae) because they supposedly hate haole's there or that the price of milk will significantly impact your life haha. Neither is true. Some people harbor contempt prior to investigation and their experiences suffer as a result. I absolutely love Oahu and plan on retiring there. I found locals to be wary, but totally welcoming if you don't have a "mainland" attitude. Get out and be part of the community. There are so many awesome things to explore. Congrats!
