Firing Weapons from Helicopters

Recommended Posts

Trying to figure out all the FAR's for firing a weapon system from a helicopter whether it be a fixed mounted weapon or a rifle shot from a seat. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I have some references to determine what is legal and what is not. Thanks

FAR's dont regulate that as much as local ordinances will. Most states dont allow areial hunting. Some do under certain laws, like Texas with hog depredation.

The main FAR that is used for reference will be operating your aircraft in a reckless manner that puts people or property in harms way.

FAR 91.13

And regarding dropping objects from an aircraft.

FAR 91.15

The final FAR to consider would be minimum safe altitudes and in consideration of where you intend to do your shooting. For example, over the fenced off DNC area would be considered a no-no. Too populated, lots of valuable property could be damaged, and other aircraft could be in the vicinity...maybe a TFR there.(special attention given to not mention persons) lol

However out over a desert area may be ok. Still there could be persons or property in the immediate danger area of the firing weapon system.

Private land with permission would probably offer the best options, again in consideration of down range persons or property.

Best bet, is speak with the local city, or county and or game and fish departments.

Also fixing a weapons platform to the aircraft would dive into needing an STC for the modification, as well as some special permits usually not afforded to general civilian aviators. Best bet is just a hand held weapon.
