Training/Classes to complete while on hold

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some guidance/ideas of training to try to get into while on hold at Rucker. I'm a LT but any advice would be appreciated. I just can't stand the fact I'm sitting around here with nothing productive to do. Thanks in advance!

Hahaha at least I'm not the only holdover being bored here at Rucker! I imagine though that it will be easier to get approved for training as an LT than it is as a WOCS holdover. Good luck!

Depends on what you're on hold for. Advanced aircraft hold has a couple opportunities, but there's nothing that I know of for people on hold for phases before that.

I think there's a medevac course open to guys waiting on a UH-60 class. Can LTs do the ALSE course? Cause I've got a few friends who are doing that while they're on hold.

I will have to go do the chamber. I asked about the ALSE course because I enjoy that sort of stuff but apparently no one from D Co has taken that course and they didn't know of any regular commissioned officers that have taken it. They also said when you go to a unit the ALSO is always a warrant officer so it would be pointless anyways.

TBH, I wouldn't really focus on trying to get other courses right now. I mean, if that's your cup of tea, go ahead, but there's not much of anything at Rucker that would benefit you. Why not take the time and get ahead on your studies. The -10, the .33, the .11. The -10 alone should be enough to keep you busy. Memorize 5, 8, and 9. Be familiar with the rest. You can look up the website for your airframe on AKO and start looking over student handouts for the academics if you are that motivated. Most of that stuff probably won't make a lot of sense though, until an instructor walks you through it in academics. Otherwise, just study all that other aviation stuff that you're going to need to know for the rest of your career....Aeromed, 95-1, AIM, .203, .240, etc.

Another option is to just enjoy the time while you have it. If you have a family, just spend time with them. If not, just chill with your buddies that are also waiting for the course. It's not often that you have "down time" so make the best of it. Once you start advanced airframe, you'll probably be swamped. Then once you get to your unit, you're going to be working your ass off trying to pave your way, and then probably get deployed. If a few years, you'll wish you just relaxed while you could. Maybe that's just me, I dunno. Just my $.02.

Things to do while on hold:

- Go to the gym

- Build a bullet factory in your garage and press ammunition

- Earn your ASEL ratings

- Earn your glider ratings

- Earn your ground-instructor ratings

- Altitude chamber

- 2CF7 (MEDEVAC doctrine) course

- Take a part-time job

- Learn to program computers

- Be a volunteer firefighter/EMT/paramedic

Are they still letting people do academics if they're not at flight line? I got lucky, started academics, and then didn't end up getting a slot on the flight line that class. I almost felt bad for the guys that were doing both at the same time.

This might be moot with the front-loaded academics. (If apaches are even doing that?)

My roommate was apaches, and got bumped repeatedly. I think he did academics two or three times. It can't do anything but help, if you can get it.

What's the deal with front-loading? When I was teaching, they were just introducing the 40 day flow ( I think it was 40...) in 60s, and if I recall, it was mostly/all front-loaded. I don't know if they ever planned on, or did implement that across the advanced airframes.

I just went to academics with a class prior to mine. Was able to complete all of academics as a sit in prior to me starting my own class. They won't let you take the tests early but you get the knowledge going prior to it being worth a grade. I highly recommend it. Tell your B CO cadre you would like to sit in on academics and they'll excuse you from the daily formations but you better actually be going or they'll fry you.
