A few questions regarding WOFT

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, this is my first post but I've been lurking awhile now.

I haven't yet started on my WOFT packet because I'm working on becoming more competitive first. I've been getting in a lot better shape physically (I dropped my two-mile run down from 18:00 minutes to 14:30 minutes - I know that's still poor but I'm getting there). I've also been volunteering and studying for the ASVAB and SIFT before taking the real test. I want to do as well as possible on everything I have control over.

Most of my questions are regarding my college career. I don't currently have a degree, but I've taken 38 credits and have a 3.4 GPA. However, I have four W's and two F's on my transcript. One of the W's I've retaken and gotten a B in and one of the F's I've retaken and gotten a C in. Obviously these aren't positive, but how negative will it portray my packet assuming I have great scores, LORs, etc? Can I still be competitive with how far along I am in school? Any suggestions to better myself aside from holding out and getting my Associates? I'm currently 24 years old and have worked full time as a locomotive mechanic for almost 6 years.

The only other things I'm concerned about are my vision and my record. I wear glasses (20/20 corrected, but maybe a little worse than 20/50 naturally). As far as my record goes, I got charged with underage drinking when I was 14 or 15 but the charges were removed upon completion of 24 hours community service (this is not apart of the 50+ hours volunteer time I mentioned above).

It is completely in your control to get a 300 on the APFT, 80 on the SIFT, and conquer your ASVAB. The board is looking for well rounded applicants that will benefit the United States Army. With that being said having a weak GPA does not mean the whole packet is suddenly weak. Focus on the things that are still in your control and make the weak GPA the ONLY negative of your packet. I've seen many people that get selected with stats that aren't spectacular and have also seen many people not be selected with stats that are jaw dropping.

If you haven't already, talk to a recruiter. Get the ball rolling and start checking off items. Get the PT up (I was able to work hard for a few months and get the 289) and start studying for the SIFT. Good luck!

3.4 is a weak GPA? Are you kidding me?

I barely graduated high school with a 1.8 GPA and had one year of community college with a 3.2 GPA. Grades aren't everything.

I wear glasses too, and my vision was much worse than yours.

Just study up real quick and put in the packet. Stop worrying about how competitive you are. Until you get a packet completed you're not even in the game.
