Greenvalley285
We are maintaining a fleet of Jet Ranger II and III helos. We are facing a problem in one of the helo's engine . It is fitted with Rolls Royce 250 C20J Engine. Leakage of Oil drops is observed, from Split Line of Accessory Gear Box, after one, and one and half hour flights. We first retorqued all the Nuts/ Hardware, securing the two halves of Accy Gearbox. However, Oil drops were observed from splitline, and on engine deck. Temporarily, we have grounded the helo. We are also pushing Supply guys, for provision of replacement Accy Gearbox. Question is, is there any define leakage limit of lub oil, from Accy Gearbox splitline. What we can do with this Accy Gearbox. Your advice is wellcome.
Turbine_man
Hi guys, I'm afraid, there is not much you can do at this stage but to repair/replace your Gearbox. No leak allowed. As we know, there is no TBO on Gearbox, it works on an "on condition" basis. And a condition which requires repair or o/h is pretty much either chip light or oil leak. More common oil leak starts in torquemeter shaft nuts areas on either side of GB, but occasionally on the split line as well. When re-building your Gearbox, your Suppliers will use a sealant and, probably, test it for leaks after assembly. There are some tricks to improve sealing, that's up to them. The bad news is, the Gearbox is a Pandora's box. They can't just open it up, clean flanges, put some sealant and slam it back together. They must inspect all the gears, bearings and rest of the parts. And the list of rejected parts is never short. There will be some costs involved. That's life.
