I'm about five weeks into the 60M course now, and slated to finish in early June. So ill try to hit the stuff you might still need to know.It is worth noting, that if you end up at K16 (Assault BN), some of the below may not apply. This is primarily if you go to Camp Humphreys. VIP, MEDEVAC and GSAB are at Humphreys, Assault and some MEDEVAC are at K16 (Seoul). Humphreys is great because its remote and everything is cheaper, but its kind of the Fort Rucker of Korea. K16 is right in the heart of Seoul and you can experience a lot. 1) Assuming you have already figured out the command sponsorship bit. If not, its high time you get on that. It takes time to apply, and you really do not want to go without your family, and then try to apply once you're in Korea. Its tough. Get it done before you leave if you can. 2) When you get there, you'll be offered the chance to live off post. Take it. You get a very generous living allowance, and since you HAVE to spend it, you get a very nice place for your money. You also get a 600$+ utility allowance, of which you might use 200/mo in the summer months. Added to COLA and HDP, you can pocket almost 1000/mo extra while in Korea if you live off post. Pretty nice. If you live at K16, you may or may not be offered the chance to live off post. I honestly do not know. 3) Cars. You will be allowed one car, even if you bring your family. You can apply for a 2nd car exemption, which you will receive, but it might take a month or two to get approved, based on how much your S1 sucks. This will make it tough to get the kiddo to and from school, but its worth living off post for most people. Once you get the 2nd car memo, you should be fine. If you plan to ship your car, ship it early if possible. It takes over a month to get things over to korea on a boat (more on that). Honestly, I would just buy a car (and then a 2nd) locally used. You can get a great car for 1000-2000 bucks, and the repair costs for Korean hooptys are super cheap. Plus, you don't really wanna put a nice car on Korean roads. The drivers are crazy, the pollution is insane, and you'll never go over 80kmh anyway. 4)HHG. you'll get to ship your HHG in 2 parts. The first is unaccompanied baggage. It will fly on a plane, and it'll beat you to Korea. The 2nd will go on a boat, and you'll be waiting for that for a while (again, 4-6 weeks to cross the pacific, apparently). Pack accordingly. You can take as many bags as you want with you as checked luggage (perks of being a pilot), so you can carry a lot with you. Just be aware, so you can put the important things in UAB, and the things you can wait for in HHG. 5) There are oppotunities to travel, and I encourage you to take them. Use the USO, MWR and leisure travel services. Just be aware, 2CAB goes to the field a lot, and there is no shortage of exercises and training events. Put your leave in early. 6) Its great you learned to fly the Mike. Youll be flying Limas in Korea. Break out the old -10 and get reacquainted. 7) You're going to get really comfortable with 1 mile of visibility. 8) They love their wires 9) Korean internet is fast as hell. It'll spoil you. Have fun! I hated most of Korea, but I enjoyed the experience. The VIP usit isn't as bad, but if you end up in the med you'll spend so much time on duty it will feel like you never see the family. I had to chuckle a bit over this one, my son left Rucker around May 22, had his unaccompanied goods packed and sent to Hawaii on May 8th and his HHG sent out on May 20th. He spent a couple weeks leave at home and landed in Hawaii June 4th. As it turned out his HHG showed up June 19th.....the unaccompanied goods arrived July 5th. The same happened with all 5 that reported to Hawaii from Rucker. Not sure if they are using a different company but they really dropped the ball this time.
