Gumby39
So, I'm about to start the process and am planning my flight physical for next month. I have to drive far for my physical, so I want to make sure everything goes smoothly. I've been reading just about everything I can on this forum, but can't seem to figure out one answer. About three going on four years ago I ended up contracting a bacterial infection. It was cleared with antibiotics. Nothing too crazy. When I go in for my physical, will the doctor have my medical records and see this bacterial infection that was treated? I was told by my recruiter it's nothing to worry about and they won't have records of anything I don't tell them about medically. Other than that I'm fine, but I want to make sure I don't go in and get asked why I didn't mention this and not provide records for it. Also, I understand the HIPPA Act situation, but just want to be 110% sure. I don't know if it's different being a flight physical. Thanks!
RiseUpNation44
If your a civilian they will have no way of knowing. They can't request your medical records without your permission, and they don't do that anyway. If your in the military it would show up ( I forgot about a broken finger and put "no" on the questionnaire and he brought it up) , but I wouldn't see it as an issue regardless.
wheelsup
They won't see the bacterial infection. I just feel like if you go into the physical and say "I'VE HAD A BACTERIAL INFECTION!" it just complicates things. I just don't think the flight surgeon wants/needs to hear about every time you've gotten sick. I don't believe it's a concern that needs to be brought to their attention. This post was bothering me because I didn't want to be giving "shady" advice to you. So I looked to see if bacterial infections could potentially "not meet the standard," and I've found nothing. So unless anyone else has found something different, I'll stand by my opinion.
Spartan13
A bacterial infection in the past will not cause any issues with your flight physical, so no need to worry. When I had mine done, I had an infection on my military medical record and the doc looked at it, didn't even ask about it and moved on. My physical came back stamped approved from Fort Rucker in only 2 or 3 weeks. With the flight physical, they're really only concerned about medical issues that might become dangerous when you're in the control of an aircraft. Rest assured, having an infection once in the past does not make you high risk. Still though, as a general rule of thumb with your medical records now and in the future, if you don't HAVE to mention something minor (infection, stomach flu, cuts and scrapes, etc), then don't.
