mudkow60
Just got back from watching some of the helo action. Amazing sights and sounds. Like a rotor air show! I have some pics if anyone wants to see. Affirmed why I love helos, and am still down this road. Mud

avbug
I came up from southern Nevada yesterday along the back of the Sierras and over Tahoe to northern california. For about 200 miles, the smoke was really bad.

avbug
I know. We're here on fire assignment. Arizona was going great guns, then snapped off like a light switch when the late monsoons began to arrive. East side of the Sierras can get unflyable when it's burning on the west side. East side of the Sierras can get unflyable when it's burning on the west side. Why would you go up the back side of the Sierras then over Tahoe to get down to Mariposa? You would literally be flying in the drift smoke all the way from Tahoe back down to mariposa. You could've saved yourself lots of trouble and fuel by going direct to Mariposa if you were in Southern Nevada...
avbug
Why would I go to mariposa? I'm not working the detweiler fire. My resource order is for another location, and the reason we flew the route we did is that it was the most direct route, as we're expected to do. We deviated west around the long valley and another fire, and that deviation took us out of Reno's airspace and over Tahoe. avbug
Read the thread. I commented on passing through the smoke from the detweiler fire on my way to my current assignment in northern california. I said nothing about going to the detweiler or to mariposa. Azhigher
Arizona was going great guns, then snapped off like a light switch when the late monsoonsbegan to arrive. Were you on the fires in AZ? If so which one? I was just happy to roll into work today and see all the TFR's were gone. Seems like the whole state was dotted up for the past month or so... avbug
Since May 1 I was on contract on fires in AZ. We stayed busy, timing out a number of days. We flew quite a few fires, but Frye, Elkhorn, Sheep, Bar X, Kellog, Bowie, Cowboy, Rucker, Encino, Saddle, Mink, Flying R, Swiss Helms, Fife, Burro, Siphon, and Roach were ones I recall that I worked. There were a few others. Then we got weather, and the show came to a grinding halt. I think the most TFR's in state was 17 or 18 at one point. We do a fair bit of business flying folks out of the rural towns that seem to be the ones that attract wildfires.
avbug
The Frye fire was the big frustration. We kept going back to that, and every time it seemed like headway was made, it turned into something else, ultimately burning down most of the mountain. The bible camp was saved, along with the observatory. We were doing a lot of work at 9,500' and higher, and much of the time, there were stiff winds and rough air. The roach fire was all structure protection, and we had several fires with that being the main thrust. Sonoita seemed to have a lot of local fires this year, especially after a storm came through. No pictures, though.
