ALARACT 085/2017

Recommended Posts

Congress allocates a service a specified amount per aviator. In this case it's $25,000/year to offer as a retention bonus. Congress however, does not specify how the money is spent. The Air Force and Navy provide the full amount to the aviators, the Army in some cases doesn't, which is why you see bonuses of 15 and 18K versus the full 25K. The only enterprise seeing full value retention bonuses is ARSOA, and even they've changed how they dole out money. The amount of your bonus is now linked directly to the level of your qualification (I.e. BMQ/FMQ/FLD/ME, etc) and you aren't eligible until you've completed your 6 year winging ADSO and your 4-year ARSOA ADSO. If you were past your 6-year winging ADSO, you'd sign for the 25K/year bonus tax free the first week you walked into the company.

We used to get an $1,000/month just for being over 20 years AFS, that too has gone away in lieu of the graduated bonus scale.

So I went to the SOAR briefing, maybe I misunderstood. Those extra monthly pays are only after your initial ADSO?

Mike would have the best answer, but from what I understand, no they start immediately. I wrote the breakdown in my notebook, but I remember the first step being <2yrs and BMQ... so to me that means before your ADSO.

I haven't kept current over the last year, but ARSOA got rid of the 25K/year and "old man bonus" of $1,000/month in lieu of a qualification based rate. If you're a BMQ you don't get squat, when you make FMQ/MTP you get one amount, the rate increases when you qualify as a Flight Lead or ME. The only figure I can remember off hand is the FMQ rate someone quoted me as around $2,250/month. You always deploy so the bonuses are always tax free, and you can sign a contract for up to 6 years. You re-sign a new contract as you gain qualifications.

I can tell you first hand if you're thinking about doing it for the money, it's not enough to keep you there, the mission is primary.

Regarding the ARSOA bonus. A $250 /month bonus has taken the place of the green platoon completion bonus. You can start collecting that upon completion of green platoon. From there the money starts increasing based on your progression and time in the regiment.

I also agree that while the money definitely factors into your familys decision to come over, it should not be the reason you are coming over. If it is you will quickly learn that its not enough. The bonus is for your family to take care of things while you are gone. Thats the way a lot of us look at it anyway.

Hidden in plain sight, in the museum. At least it was back in March.

Lol you are exactly right but let me clarify, I meant to say the functioning one. I recently heard it isn't on Rucker, It was moved to Redstone to test out some type of tech? Idk though, I tend to hear a bunch of BS during fundet overnights....
