CWard
I've been working with my recruiter for 12 months now. It's been one hell of a process. I imagine there are far worse stories than mine. As for the blood I'm not worried. The Marine Corps tested every year and I never had any issues. Just a bone headed mistake on my part. Rzrbak63
My physical was ready to go nearly two months after part 2. I didnt have any waivers but I did have to see a cardiologist in between parts 1 and 2. Check around the usarec website and give a call if its been a while. I wouldnt recommend rushing anyone but asking around isnt the worst plan in the world.
mike0331
This summer it only took them 2 weeks to get me my stamped phys -- and that was with my disability rating for back and knees. I was pretty surprised. Good luck
Byron625
Been in the shadows researching a little over a year now. Finally making head way on my packet, and having a few concerns, figured I would post and see what the experienced collective here have to say. I took the SIFT this morning and scored a 76. I've been working with my recruiter since Feb17. Everything has been going slow but well in my packet process. The last month a new station chief moved in and since then my recruiter has been adamantly voicing concerns that I will not be accepted and should go enlisted so I don't waste anyone's time. I'd just like to ask if I'm being naive for thinking I'll be good or if their sudden change of mind bears truth.MEPS physical no waiversLASIK aug16 no issuesSIFT 76GT 121Haven't officially ran APFT but should be at least 270-2806 years USMCR 1371 got out as E5no collegeDo have a VA claim that has been passed thru MEPS and was seen as no issue. Recruiter believes the VA and my LASIK will be an issue for the flight physical. What study guide did you use?
CWard
One on Kindle called "The complete SIFT study guide" and another I bought on Amazon called "SIFT study guide" Those were the only two when I was looking but I think there are a few more now. Those two are good study guides but they each have a few discrepancies in them. Nothing major tho.
mike0331
I would also read the FAA helicopter flying handbook. Brush up on math up through logs, algebra, fractions, and geometry as well. I pulled off a 75 but on the math portion I completely drew a blank when it came to logs. I took calc I and II in college but that was 7-8 years ago. I should have spent more time reviewing math. Kur
May I ask something in here rather than opening a thread? If I get LASIK pre MEPS physical, will they fail me too if 6 months havent lapsed or is it only flight med thag requires the wait?
CWard
MEPS also requires the wait. That is the amount of time it takes for most people's vision to fully stabilize after LASIK.
Kur
Thank you, CWard. Is it an option then to get Lasik after the meps physical or do they not allow you to have any kind of surgery after that without telling them? It would just shave off some time if I could get the meps physical and PT test out of the way in those 6 months but I fear I already know the answer. The reason why Im so worried about it is I turn 31 in June and if I get Lasik done now I may be good for a board in the fall (with optimism). CWard
I wouldn't recommend it. For the flight physical they measure the thickness of your corneas. If it's too thin you can't fly, Period. Having LASIK takes away from the thickness. You can look up the minimum and the LASIK Dr checks thickness pre and post surgery. PT test can be done basically anywhere anytime. It took me 9 months to get everything MEPS wanted between my LASIK and The VA. 2 weeks later I did the SIFT and a month after that I did the flight physical. Focus on being medically ready. Then the SIFT. Everything else is easy and in your control.
Kur
They said on the thin side but not very thin. If I had known thats a consideration tooI would have asked to know that measurement. Where can I find this tidbid of information? Everything I find about vision online is never from a direct army source.I really do need totake the Sift soon as Ive been preparing for it almost too long. Plus, college classes are starting soon and will begin to take over my head. My recruiter said I have to do the meps physical before they do a PT test because it will determine if Im fit to take a PT test...While were at it: If the board convenes and selects me while Im 31 but sometime between that and entering flight school I turn 32, do I need an age waiver?
CWard
I can't recall what the exact minimum is. It should be somewhere in the 40-501. Pre LASIK I was ~600 microns. Post was ~535. The average person is 540. I don't believe you would need a waiver post selection.
Kur
Super. Thanks for providing me with that info. I appreciate your time. Sometimes its REALLY difficult to find answer to such specific questions.
Mos303
Hello just a quick question. I just had my flight physical and the eye doctor told me my astigmatism came back -.50 over the standard. He recommended LASIK or PRK to fix it, however he did say that because I am so close to the borderline that I may be able to get a waiver for my vision as is. Does anyone have any experience with getting waivers from Ft. Rucker? Is there a request I have to send out or do I just send in my physical as is and hope for the best? I am not against LASIK or PRK but if I can avoid it and submit now obviously that would be my preferred course of action. Thanks, Zach

There really wasn't anything I had to do but get an extra appointment with a specialist in order to conduct all the tests to provide extra information for the waiver. My entire medical waiver process was handled by the docs who input the waiver into the "system" to get evaluated by Ft. Rucker. There is a document (APL?) that lists out all the abnormal conditions and the limitations the board will accept. Within this doc it also lists the information requirements needed for the waiver to be processed/assessed. I forgot the actual name of the document but I know it can be googled, I'd look up "aeromedical policy letters" and then confirm through your local PA to make sure you're in the right place. My PA was badass and did most of the hunting and fact-finding for me. -Dave
Lindsey
There is an APL for LASIK and PRK and the pre surgery refraction limits. I highly recommend either of the two surgeries.
Mcwilli
Im a little concerned about my flight physical. Im active duty Air Force, and was wondering if I will get grief at my flight physical for a rod and two pens I have in my leg. I received a waiver from Meps when I entered, and I hope Ft. Rucker will honor that. Anyone know how that will play out at my flight physical?

Mcwilli
Will I have to get all of my pre and post op docs again?
Thedude
Will I have to get all of my pre and post op docs again? It would be best to have them on hand. If a waiver is required it almost always requires the medical documentation of the procedures to be submitted with it.

Nola Agent
Since my question is on this topic, i'll post here instead of starting a new thread. Does the flight physical have to be performed by an Army flight surgeon or can one from another branch perform it? I live close to Keesler Air Force base and Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans that's home to many different aviation units and I'm just wondering if I could get this done at either of these locations. If not, I'm only 5 hrs from Rucker and 4 hrs from Polk so it's not that big of an issue. -Richard
Lindsey
You will save yourself exponentially more than 5 hours if youre able to just do it at Rucker.
Dmurray
You will save yourself exponentially more than 5 hours if youre able to just do it at Rucker. This! Schedule it at Rucker. It will be done correctly, to the standard they are looking for. If you go through Air Force or Navy, you could potentially have problems with what they do versus what Rucker wants to see. The drive from Rucker to NOLA is not terrible either. Make a trip out of it, visit the Aviation Museum.......
