Basic to WOCS

Recommended Posts

Can anyone weigh in on the transition between basic and WOCS in terms of time to get the packing list ready and move to Rucker? I've seen the 10 days tossed around here and there but don't see any straight answers.

Some other applicants and I searched the forums and google and can't seem to find an answer.

I leave for basic soon and while I know it's been done hundreds of time before, it's always nice to know what to expect beforehand when you can.

Thank you

Whatever day is your report day will be approx 10-14 days before you start wocs. Youll be in hhc inprocessing for those days. Youll have time to get the items on the packing list.

Street to seat candidates will always have at least 10 days between the time you arrive at Rucker to the time you start WOCS. This time is used to in-process Fort Rucker. You'll have more than ample time to get anything you need on the packing list. The best advice I can give you is to figure out a way to take your own vehicle. It IS authorized by WOCS to bring your car from BCT. I had my wife bring my truck to my BCT graduation and we left immediately following that to drive from Benning to Rucker. You'll probably have to fight for it at BCT but it is way more than worth it!!! Rucker is a small post but you can finish in-processing much faster being able to drive around and can leave post to get some stuff from office depot and Walmart for your packing list.

Shoot me a message if you have any other questions about the process. I know it WAY too well and spent a LONG time at HHC waiting to start WOCS after BCT.

While your orders will appear to give you ten days most of us arrived on friday and started immediately into preparations on monday. That ten days is eaten up as a " snowbird" preparing to start class the next week. Youll get a weekend and thats about it. My wife drove to get me at basic, dropped me at rucker and returned home for 7 more weeks. After wocs you can get a little time to go on leave and properly move which can pocket you some decent money if you do it yourself.

Are you guys including your snowbird week in the 7 week timeline for WOCS?

I'm not though I think BM might be. ALL aviators coming for WOCS should arrive at a minimum 10 days early to in-process the post. In many instances candidates coming from BCT have gotten several weeks if not even a month early just by way of scheduling from MEPS.

I just ask because I was in a long WOCS class and it was 6 weeks. Myself and my fellow classmates who were at Ft Jackson arrived just a couple days prior to the "bag drag" and starting WOCS. I never even got to put on a snowbird patch. I am wondering if this is why WOCS was only 6 weeks, seeing as we never really got a "reception week." Or has the curriculum changed and added a week in the time since I was there?

Honestly I dont remember. I do distinctly remember having ten days between bct and the start of the course on my orders. But reality was that gap was the snowbird prep/ post inprocess time before bag drag. Just conveying that on paper it looks like you have time but in reality you will have quite alot to do. This is the ideal timeline. You dont want to spend anymore time hanging around 1st wocs than necessary. Especially for the bct to wocs 7 week classes. missing one could mean waiting quite a while for another.

Example from the 7 week class last May:

-May 4: BCT graduation

-May 5: ship to Fort Rucker to report "late" as an aviator for a May 11 WOCS start date. Either the 10 day early thing doesn't apply to candidates going straight from BCT to WOCS, or MEPS hasn't always gotten the message. Couple days to inprocess Fort Rucker, weekend is yours, inprocess HHC after post, etc.

-May 10: last day to report for non-aviators.

-May 11: official class start date, but mainly briefings and getting ready over the next few days (still time to stencil) to "cross the street" aka bag drag Monday afternoon.

-May 15: the fun begins.
