My journey to WOFT

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am starting this thread to

Document my journey to WOFT. I have always wanted to serve my country, and now that I am a bit older, I realize I don't have much time left to get in and be the best I can be. I have always been interested in aviation, and after recently meeting with recruiter, I discovered the WOFT program and this website. I have made up my mind I want to submit an application for woft, and try my luck at being accepted. This journey will more than likely take close to a year, as I am not near my PT goals, nor educated enough...yet, to confidently take the sift and get the score I believe to be necessary for acceptance to woft. Let me give a few stats:

Age: 25

Convictions: DUI -2014, 5-6 traffic tickets

AFQT:79 - I walked in off the street no study time

Asvab: not yet taken

I have scoured this site vigorously and believe I know what is necessary of me to accomplish my dream of being in army aviation. From what I've gathered I'll need to make sure my GT portion of asvab is 125 and above. Sift score will likely need to be 62 and above. My APFT Will need to be 270+. I am also aware I will be hindered due to my dui and traffic violations, however I refuse to allow "the possibility" of being rejected keep me from at least trying. I just enrolled into community college, should have my AA finished at end of spring semester 2019...hopefully that will look good should I go in front of the board. I spoke to my recruiter last week and said I am only interested in woft, assured him I knew what I was getting myself into and what was expected of me. Most ppl on this site say the recruiters will be 100% against me, so that's what I expected, however my recruiter understood I was not only smart, but serious and said he is behind me all the way. The exact opposite of what I expected, so at least I'm off to a good start by having my recruiter behind me. I understand fully it is a longshot, I'll need waivers, outstanding scores, and even better LOR'S, but I won't let that deter me. Most of my information comes from reading through this forum, so a big thanks to all the people on this website. Without you we would have nowhere to find inside knowledge. I'll try to keep this updated as often as I can, if anyone has any advice or suggestions about anything, I'd appreciate anything you have to say...even the criticisms or negative responses.

After all the research I finally decided to contact my eye doctor to see what my vision was (I wear glasses). I was told correctable to 20/25 I L eye, 20/40 in R eye. For some reason I thought I was corrected to 20/20. Lol guess I won't be flying anything as a pilot. What an underwhelming way to find out I'm not qualified. Thanks for reading, sorry for wasting your time.

There are waivers available for LASIK or PRK if you have the money and meet the pre-surgical limits. I just got my procedure done about a month ago with great results. Just look around on the forum for information about it, you will find tons of stuff about it. There are plenty of pilots now who have undergone the surgery, don't let your eyes hold you back.

Sincerely,

Charlie N.

Not to be a downer but has everyone skipped the DUI conviction? I think ya could show up blind and have a better chance, has anyone seen anyone get through ever with that? For crying out loud thats a career ender even after soaking up a half million in training. Normally I am definately a cheer leader for people applying but I wouldnt want to make you think you could and spend thousands just to find out you didnt have a chance due to other factors.

I’d agree. A DUI and multiple traffic tickets would be a nonselect for me. It shows a lack of control and ability or willingness to follow rules/laws/regulations and operate in a safe manner. If you can’t do that driving a simple car I see no point in potentially wasting half a million dollars to find out you can’t do it in an Army helicopter.

I have seen one instance where someone made it in with a DUI. However, the DUI happened over ten years prior to his application and he was a minor when it happened.

2014 wasnt even 5 years ago. I know the Army is short aviators, but I would be very surprised to see them overlook that.

1. I would say do PRK or LASIK. My vision wasn't anywhere near to passing the flight physical uncorrected. Did it and never looked back. Passed my flight physical eye exam last week and awaiting part 2 next week.

2. I have a friend also applying to the WOFT program with a DUI. I've only had one traffic ticket over 7 years ago and I had to get a waiver for it. It's a long shot but why not try? Try to get a waiver for it before you do the surgery though.

I needed a waiver to be a WO from a speeding ticket from 2009. Aviation board didn't require anything, however. This is guard side, so take it for what its worth.

Unfortunately, a moral waiver is the last thing we run in USAREC. A WOFT applicant must be test and physically qualified in order for a waiver to n. Any violation, to include regular traffic tickets over $300 require a moral waiver to be signed off on by the CG of USAREC. It still doesn't hurt to try. A wise man once said, you miss 100% of the shots that you don't take. Hope this helps.
