Ground School

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Im a street to seater shipping for WOFT in January. Im thinking about doing PPL ground school at a local airport here at home while waiting to ship just to build on my current aviation knowledge (which isnt much), so I can go to Rucker with at least a little understanding. Would ground school be worth doing now or would it be mainly a waste of time/money?

I'm currently going through primary with 0 prior knowledge. The first bit is crazy just bc of how much of a time crunch there is. But flight school school is designed to go from nothing to pilot. So would it help probably some. At least for basic vfr flight, vfr sectionals and such. But a lot of it is also Army specific. Like what does 95-1 say about that and ect. Or Airframe specific like EPs and limits.

In the end, if ya have the money and time and you want to do it for the peace of mind, go a head. I dont see how it would hurt. But it'll also be about 9-10 months till ya get back to it again so ya may be a little rusty and a lot of ground school doesnt come together for me till I hit the flight line. But I'm also a hands on learner.

My personal opinion, waste of time/money. I think spending the next couple of months solidifying fundamentals of flight and some flight regulations in "Army terms and definitions," would be more beneficial as opposed to how the civilian world operates.

Wouldn't hurt you either way. Ground school in the Army isn't hard. It's just that you will be learning in a time crunch all the time.

Ehhh I can't say I found the ground school portion "easy" just because of how competitive it is. I guess it's easy to get okay grades but to be getting 98s and 100s, it's pretty tough. I definitely agree that there's a constant time crunch that never ends lol

With all that being said, you still have several months of training before getting to the aviation stuff so it really is up to you.

Studying aerodynamics and met would be an advantage - there is no difference between civil and military weather or lift.

True, but could also get some of that information by watching videos online rather than paying to go through the ground school. Or digging into the pubs. AR 95-1 is Army reg on flight. TC 3-04.4 Chapter 1 covers a lot of the basics of aerodynamics that you'll cover in the first month of primary. Those should both be avalible on the Army Publishing Directorate if ya want to look into em. But also I saw on Youtube and online ground school that does a good job of covering a lot of the basics. Or a youtube channel called Smarter everyday had a good helicopter series he did.
