Recommendation of a flight bag for the R22

Recommended Posts

I posted this question before the board was redone so I am unable to go back and search. At that time I was not ready to really get a flight bag because I was just a beginning student. Well now I'm very close to getting my PPL and feel I pretty much know what I need to keep in the flight bag. There were some recommendations made for flight bags that fit well under the seats of the R22. Specifically there was one bag that was recommended that did not have to be full to maintain it's shape.

So, what bags do you guys like for the R22?

Well, I might be using the bag wrong as well. I carry whatever I need to plan a flight and complete it. This is what I have in mine.

Plotter

Sectionals

Mini Mag Light

Finger Light

Sunglasses

Roll of medical tape

Knee board

Flight Planners

Log book

Flight Guide - Airport and Frequency Manual

POH - Just so I don't get the real one dirty while doing pre-flight mostly...

Flight Computer

A Watch, (I don't normall wear one, except when flying)

Foot and Hand warmers (You know those chemical packs that react to air once opened, the R22 I fly doesn't have heat)

Highlighters, Pens, Pencils, and a Sharpie

Headset

Gloves

That's all I can think of off the top of my head....

you could leave most of that stuff behind. seems to me you're adding clutter and weight.

I don't carry the bag with me if I'm just going out for a couple hours, it will just sit in the hanger. But soon I will be going for overnighters. I will be in spots that I can't plan out every flight I will be taking for the time I'm gone. I will get to where I'm working then I will be given my assignments. Then I need to be able to plan my flights. Seems like I will need that stuff at that time.

But to the question at hand, I'm wondering what kind of bag I need for those times I do need to bring the bag. I would like something fits well with the 22....

I think a kinder way of saying it might be.... ---> Leave everything behind, except the sectionals, kneeboard, and headset (and mag and finger light at night). If you're in an R-22, you can leave most the other stuff behind unless you're going on a particularly long X-country. If you are doing a long one (i.e. - say overnight, like you could do that in an R-22 :P ), bring just what is required to do some type of X-country planning at your next stop.

A personal preference of mine... (I do most my flying at night) ...is a lip light. It is lightweight and very convenient. Less trouble than a flashlight or a finger light as far as fumble factor. Especially, if you are busy and talking...

If information from a facility directory is needed, write it down before you depart (in readable sized print), it's too hard to fumble around with while flying. Write down the frequencies, runway directions, and other pertinent info. If you feel you still need the facility directory for info, clip it open to the appropiate page(s). Generally, the only reason to access a operating manual while flying is for emergencies. In my opinion, those procedures should be memorized cold in a single pilot helicopter.

There is a saying in avaition - "aviate, navigate, communicate". Those are a pilot's priorities in order of importance. Organize yourself to maximize potential to maintain those priorities. Being "too prepared" is almost like a quarterback taking a pocket protector, slide rule, and a protractor into the game...

As you further your career, cockpit organization is key. Judgement about it is a major part of obtaining an ATP rating...

This probably comes across as being somewhat opinionated... But just trying to explain in a less general way what I think others are saying.

Looks like I posted at the same time as you, Fuse... ...See you have the general idea :) Cool...

No disrespect intended, but I don't see the downside of carrying a flight bag. I'm in the same situation as Fuse (about to get my helicopter add-on rating) and ALWAYS carried my flight bag when flying fixed-wing. I carry some of what Fuse does in addition to a handheld GPS and handheld COM and a legal pad and half a dozen pens and my logs. It's very organized and adds very little little weight. And I can name half a dozen flights where I was SO glad I had the flight bag!

Fuse, I'd like to give you a name/model# but it's not a true flight bag, but a hybrid pack that was a freebie at a tech conference several years ago. It doesn't look the part but I can't tell the number of comments I've received from other pilots about how handy it is.

When i fly a solo xc i use a small jansport back pack. my main reason is if i end up in a situation where im out in the middle of nowhere the bag is a lot more managable if i end up having to hike a few miles to radio/cell phone reception. The reason i would take the bag to begin with is becuase it has some basic survival stuff in it.... im a believer in murphys law.

I use a small military tool bag......It's made out of heavy canvas and makes a great little bag. It has more than enough room for extra flash lights, basic survival gear, basic tools, and some overnight gear (extra shirt, socks, undies, toothbrush/paste, etc.) I change out the chemical heat pads, gloves, and such for sunscreen & insect repelant in the summer. All together it weighs 4-5 lbs.

They're about $10 from any military surplus store or "Cheaper Than Dirt"

If you want a real flight bag, Flight Gear from Sporty's and Sisson Satchels both make smaller bags that'll fit in a R22/R44 no problem.

I found a bag at outdoor_tatical_sport, they sell thru e-bay. It will hold a headset, kneeboard, charts, etc. Has several external pockets for handheld GPS, radio, flashlight etc. It has a large velcro panel on the outside of it, that I use to "stick" it to the ops manual holder on the R22. Might want to check it out.

  • 10 years later...

Found this post from 2006 regarding gear bags. I'm currently shopping for a couple of gear/overnight bags that will fit under the seat in the R22. There have been a lot of improvements in gear bags since 2006 regarding organization, strength and weight of materials, etc. Any recommendations?? Thanks!

I carry a 'Sky HIgh' bag that's perfect for storing under a 22 seat. I carry my headset, 10" tablet, RAM mount, glasses, sunscreen, pen, sectional, spare batteries for the A20s and a checklist holder. It costs less than $40.

Flight bags are generally for things you need or might need while preflighting.

i.e. fuel tester, sponge (to clean out fuel tester when you find water in the fuel), oil rag, bandaids for when you cut yourself, sports stape to hold the bandaid on, water bottle, extra batteries, cotter pins, etc.

Hopefully you can leave this stuff in the hanger, or a box out near the pads if you have to park far away from the hanger, since you won't need them while flying, unless you're going xcountry and plan on stopping for gas a lot.

If you're engaged in flight instruction all the time you really can't bring a flight bag since dual in a 22 you need all the extra ounces you can spare for gas. Just put your headset, glasses, kneeboard, and hat in a plastic grocery bag for the walk out to the chopper!

If however you are planning an overnighter the Sky High bag previously mentioned works great! I have a slightly larger one than in the picture and I use it all the time as a carry-on when I fly on SouthWest.

The only thing I need preflighting is a flashlight. The flight bag carries snacks, extra water, at the moment a giant plastic skeleton spider that I'm planning on hiding in the base garden area, a small bottle of cleaner for my helmet lens, an extra helmet pigtail, a church key for turbine oil, and some little orange rubber-coated bendy things that I use for wrapping up wires like GPS plugs, etc. Once in a great while the helmet goes in there, too.
